BASRA, Iraq: Thousands of people protested against an anti-Islam film on Friday in Basra in south Iraq, burning American and Israeli flags and carrying pictures of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The protesters marched for more than an hour in central Basra, some carrying large posters of Khamenei, while police and soldiers deployed in the area, an AFP correspondent said. They shouted slogans like “No, no America, no, no Israel” and “Yes, yes for the Messenger, we sacrifice for you, O Messenger of God,” in reference to the Prophet Mohammed (SAW).
The protesters also burned US and Israeli flags. A film made in the US, titled “Innocence of Muslims,” portrays the Holy Prophet (SW) and Islam in a negative light and has sparked protests across the Muslim world.
French schools, consulates and cultural centres in 20 Muslim countries were closed along with the embassies for fear of retaliatory attacks. In the shrine city of Najaf, Sadr al-Din al-Qubanchi, a senior cleric who leads Friday prayers, told worshippers that “the film abusing the Messenger of God was planned ... to target Muslims, and that aggression on the Messenger ... is aggression on all Muslims.”
“America, Israel and France were behind this plan ... and it reflects the political and cultural bankruptcy of the United States of America and Israel and France,” he said. In an apparent reference to both the film and caricatures, Mithal al-Hasnawi, a representative of powerful cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, called during a Friday sermon in Baghdad’s Sadr City for Iraqi officials to take “one stance against the positions of the Americans and the French.”
