Is it possible to pray on something else than a prayer carpet?

Everytime I visit my family in Algeria, I sometimes see them do their prayer on clean clothes like gandoura/Jellaba/Qamis... because there is too much people and not enough prayer carpet.
You know what I mean? And I'm wondering if it is OK. I'm sorry if my question might seem stupid...

Not stupid at all. I have done this too where there was no carpet. As far as I am aware, there is nothing to say we must use a carpet, I think it is just to make doubly sure. As long as the place is clean and pure from things like doghair etc. it should be alright InshaAllah.
