:salam2:
everyday, i check out the news on the internet; usually FOX NEWS or CNN and i find that they always have something on there to bash islam and muslims. they have been successful because we muslims don’t really have the power to make our voices heard on a large scale.
usually, the articles or reports that these news agencies make are always trying to show how islam is the world’s biggest problem. we all remember the muhammad teddy bear issue that took place in the sudan. it was the perfect opportunity for every major news outlet to bash muslims and to portray them as radicals. but the truth is that most muslims were appalled by the reaction of the thousands of protesting and death wishing sudanese muslims. yet, no common sense muslims were every interviewed or given a forum to discuss the issue.
i’ve also come to notice that whenever a muslim commits a crime, his faith is always mentioned. of course it’s a blatant attempt to link islam with various crimes. yet, when an average american commits a crime, his faith; usually christianity, is never mentioned. yet we muslims overall remain quite voiceless. we aren’t given that public forum on things.
i’ve come to the conclusion that we will not be added to the debate on FOX or CNN because we are serious muslims. these networks have chosen which muslims they’ll have on their programs. many of which appear to be more against islam than for it. it’s amazing that the muslim women they put on aren’t wearing hijab, wearing makeup etc. the muslim man is clean shaven etc and has graduated from America's most elitist of schools. basically they’re putting muslims on that aren’t very serious or knowledgeable in their deen. they trick the american people by saying this ahmed so and so or this is zainab so and so; terrorism expert. the people hear these muslim names and take whatever these bad muslims say as truth.
so what can we do to combat this unfair media onslaught? we have to accept the fact that we aren’t going to be positively portrayed on major media outlets. but there is another way that we can. it’s called paid programming. people actually watch paid programming. i’ve also come to notice that when muslims are on tv, people watch. they’re interested in what we have to say or as to what we are doing. inshallah, i hope to get the funds necessary to put something together. most americans have cable television, and we have enough muslims here to be put on several cable channels. even if we cannot buy the best time slot, just having a time slot will help us get our voices out there. so if we muslims know of someone trying to get something like this done, please support that brother and sister in islam. it would be a wonderful way to inform people about our deen.
