Exploring urban issues facing 21st century, The Mile High Tower offers a fresh perspective on an idea that has been debated by architects for a century"1 mile =1600 M . Exploding land values, growing populations and expanding economies are placing extraordinary burdens on many culturally rich, but land deprived Asian regions. In response to these pressures we have proposed a vertical city. In conceiving the tower as a vertical city, the design team has integrated technological, architectural and urban planning strategies into a single structure that breathes with urban complexity. The scale of the building and the scope of the program force the reevaluation of current skyscraper precedents for form, purpose, infrastructure, transportation, structure, and sustainability.

Architecture and engineering have traditionally treated structure as static—the building frame was constructed to be strong and heavy enough to resist all anticipated loads. The Mile High Tower proposes a lighter, dynamic structural system that actively responds to forces placed upon it. Controlled by wind detecting sensors, stabilizing aileron-like fins run the length of the tower frame and modulate their position to control resonant motion and building drift.

The separation of the structural frame and the building envelope enhances the quality of the interior space by providing an abundance of natural light and ventilation. Equipped with wind generators, photovoltaic panels, a heliostat, and sewage treatment facilities, the tower attains a high degree of sustainability with minimal environmental impact.

Approaching the tower as a theoretical project has proven liberating, freeing the design team to seek new solutions to technical problems, to find creative approaches outside the present financial climate, and to implement environmentally sustainable strategies that will enhance the next generation of ultra-high rise buildings. Our paradigm is the human body. This near-future tower incorporates structural and climatic systems that, like the human body, respond dynamically and efficiently to forces placed upon them.

Project Master plan received by Pickard Chilton

Kingdom Holding Company, Chaired by HRH Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, announced today Monday 17th September 2007, that Bechtel (BEKtl) company was chosen to supervise and develop the real estate project in Jeddah. Bechtel company was chosen out of seven other companies that were in a competitive bid to supervise and develop the Jeddah project.

Bechtel is a global engineering, construction and project management company with more than a century of experience on complex projects in challenging locations especially in Saudi. Privately owned with headquarters in San Francisco, they have 40 offices around the world and nearly 40,000 employees.

Kingdom Holding Company received the Jeddah Project Master plan from Pickard Chilton, reputable and renowned designers who have designed some of the world’s significant and recognizable buildings, including Kingdom Center recognized by its iconic tower.

The Jeddah project, one of the major real estate projects planned by Kingdom Holding Company, and other projects in Riyadh, has an area of 5.3 million square meters and is located in the city's northern area on the Red Sea coastline, which is a strategic area for the development of this project. The investment value of the project is estimated at SR50 billion upon completion, comprising of a colossal skyscraper with a surrounding area for other facilities (residential, commercial, construction of a five star hotel and offices). The residential area will be 1.5 million square meters, the size of the commercial area will be 470,000 square meters, education vicinity with an area of 150,000 square meters and the size of the offices area will be 800,000 square meters. The remaining lands will be utilized for leisure facilities, tourism and the construction of four star hotels.

Furthermore, there are plans for the development of a diplomatic quarter on the Jeddah land. The site plans for the land were developed by HOK, a Canadian company that has world wide recognition. The project will also connect the Red Sea coastline of the area to Sharm Obhur, an environment of natural beauty. KHC is also currently in cooperation with the Jeddah municipality and other administrations to ensure that all the appropriate requirements are met for the success of the project. Saudi builder eyes world's tallest tower - MEED.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DUBAI, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Kingdom Holding Co 4280.SE, controlled by Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, plans to invite bids before July for contracts to build the world's tallest tower in Saudi Arabia, a weekly magazine said.

The Mile High tower, which could reach 1,600 metres (5,249 ft) in height, is to be built in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah and may cost up to $10 billion, the London-based Middle East Economic Digest (MEED) said in its latest issue, citing a source close to the project.

Dubai's Emaar Properties EMAR.DU, the largest Arab developer by market value, is currently building the Burj Dubai, part of a $20 billion project in the emirate, which it says will be the world's tallest building.

The Mile High tower could be twice as tall as the Burj Dubai, MEED said. (Writing by Daliah Merzaban; Editing by Michael Urquhart)

Tenders expected within six months to build 1,600-metre skyscaper.

The Riyadh-based Kingdom Holding Company will launch, in the first half of the year, tenders for the major construction packages on its project to build the world's tallest tower in Jeddah.

The tenders will follow a final investment decision on the project, which MEED understands is imminent.

The tower in Jeddah, also known as the Mile High tower, could reach 1,600 metres, or one mile, in height, making it twice the height of the current tallest building in the world, Burj Dubai, which is under construction.

"It is generally understood that the project is going forward," says a source close to the project.

"It has not stopped and we don't think it is going to be stopped. The prince [Kingdom chairman Prince Alwaleed bin Talal al-Saud] has indicated he is ready."

While the final height and number of storeys are yet to be finalised, the budget is expected to be up to $10bn.

There is still secrecy over which companies are involved with the project. However, MEED understands that the UK's Hyder Consulting is working in a joint venture with Arup, also of the UK, as engineer on the project.

Saudi firm Omrania is the project architect and the US' Bechtel is the construction manager.

In mid-February, Andrew Davids, director of structures at Hyder, confirmed his company was working on a tower in the region that would be twice as tall as the Burj Dubai, but declined to name it (MEED 13:2:08).

According to Rukn Eldeen, project manager with Omrania, the tower plot will be 170,000 square metres.

The tower's projected height means wind will be a major factor in the design, and Eldeen says the company has spoken to wind consultants and lift manufacturers to deal with the logistical challenge of transporting elevator passengers to such a height.

The tower is part of a wider real estate project planned by Kingdom Holding.

The development covers 5.3 sq km and is located in the north of the city near the creek.

The investment value of the project is estimated at SR50bn ($13.6bn) on completion.

It will be split into a residen--
tial area of 1.5 million sq m, a business zone of 800,000 sq m, and a 470,000 sq m commercial area. There will also be an education area of 150,000 sq m, along with leisure and tourism facilities and hotels.

Omrania has worked on several Kingdom Holding projects. It designed the Kingdom Centre in Riyadh, which was completed in 2002. At 302 metres, it is currently the kingdom's tallest building.

Hyder has been working on Emaar Properties' Burj Dubai, in Dubai, which is due to be completed at the end of 2009.

Burj Dubai had reached 605 metres and 159 floors by early February, more than 90 metres higher than the world's tallest completed building, Taiwan's Taipei 101, and more than 40 metres higher than the world's tallest free-standing structure, Toronto's CN Tower. Its final height is expected to be 818 metres.

Other super-tall buildings planned in the Gulf include Burj Mubarak al-Kabir in Kuwait's City of Silk, which is expected to hit 1,001 metres, and Al-Burj in Dubai, which is planned to reach 1,200 metres.

Construction of super-tall towers creates immense construction and design challenges.

The effect of wind on the structure and the logistics of carrying out construction at such a height make such projects not only financially punishing but also technically demanding.

Its too bad they couldn't design it themselves. Like i always say. If the Arabs want to dig a whole in the ground they have to go ask the Americans for help.

Signs of the Last Hour - Tall Buildings
In the famous Hadith of Jibril (A.s) which we often hear, what we don't usually know is that in the same hadith the Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi WaSlam)actually prophesied about the appearance of tall buildings at the end of time. See the full hadith below:

`Umar ibn Khattab (Allah be well pleased with him) said: "As we were sitting one day before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a man suddenly appeared. He wore pure white clothes and his hair was dark black—yet there were no signs of travel on him, and none of us knew him. He came and sat down in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), placing his knees against his, and his hands on his thighs. He said, "O Muhammad! Tell me about Islam."

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Islam is to bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God; and to perform the prayer; pay zakat; fast Ramadan; and to perform Hajj to the House if you are able."

The man said, "You have spoken the truth," and we were surprised that he asked and then confirmed the answer. Then, he asked, "Tell me about belief (iman)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "It is to believe in Allah; His Angels; His Books; His Messengers; the Last Day; and in destiny—its good and bad."

The man said, "You have spoken the truth. Now, tell me about spiritual excellence (ihsan)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "It is to serve Allah as though you behold Him; and if you don't behold him, (know that) He surely sees you."

"Now, tell me of the Last Hour," asked the man.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "The one asked knows no more of it than the one asking."

"Then tell me about its signs," said the man.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "That slave women give birth to their mistresses; and that you see barefoot, unclothed, beginning shepherds competing in the construction of tall buildings."

Then the visitor left, and I waited a long time. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me, "Do you know, Umar, who the questioner was?" I replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said (Allah bless him and give him peace), "It was Jibril. He came to you to teach you your religion." [Sahih Muslim]

Among the signs of the Hour mentioned by the Noble Messenger of Allah - Allah bless and greet him and his Family and Companions - in Sahih al-Bukhari is "when the destitute (al-buhm) camelherds compete in building tall structures." Another version in al-Bukhari has: "when the barefoot and the naked are the top leaders (lit. "heads") of the people." In Sahih Muslim: "you shall see the barefoot, naked, indigent (al-`âla) shepherds compete in building tall structures." Another version in Muslim states: "when the naked and barefoot are the top leaders of the people." A third version in Muslim has: "when you see that the barefoot and naked, the deaf and dumb are the kings of the earth."

Ibn Hajar said in commenting this passage of the hadith in Fath al-Bari:

It was said that "bear-foot and naked," "deaf and dumb" are their attributes by way of hyperbole, showing how coarse they are. That is, they did not use their hearing or sight in anything concerning their Religion even though they are of perfectly sound senses. The Prophet's (saws) words: "The heads of the people" means the kings of the earth. Abu Farwas' narration names the kings explicitly. What is meant by them is the people of the desert country, as was made explicit in Sulayman al-Taymi's and other narrations: "Who are the barefoot and naked?" He answered: "The Bedouin Arabs."

Al-Tabarani relates through Abu Hamza, on the authority of Ibn `Abbas from the Prophet Muhammad, sallahu alayhi wa sallam, that "one of the signs of the change of the Religion is the affectation of eloquence by the rabble and their betaking to palaces in big cities."

Al-Qurtubi said: "What is meant here is the prediction of a reversal in society whereby the people of the desert country will take over the conduct of affairs and rule every region by force. They will become extremely rich and their primary concern will be to erect tall building and take pride in them. We have witnessed this in our time as well as the import of the hadith: "The hour will not rise until the happiest man will be the depraved son of a depraved father (lukka` ibn lukka`)," and also "if the leadership is entrusted to those unfit for it, then expect the hour," both found in the authentic collections."
