    Salaam,

There is often a superfocus on how females should dress in Islam on this board but I rarely see anything regarding our brothers. I was reading up on the latest fatwas and found a fairly well written fatwa regarding this very subject. I found it quite enlightening and insh'Allah, so shall everyone else. :)

I thought I'd give this a bump since we had a small scuffle in the thread about women wearing hijab. I think we women need to honor ourselves enough to cover our bodies but I also think our brothers need reminding that they have a dresscode as well.

    Assalaam walaikum,

I have to agree with you 100% sister.

I am always amazed how men come into the masjid in jeans and t-shirts. Here we are all dolled up and covered ( like old fashioned nuns) and the men come in scruffy.

Nothing looks better on a man than to look like a man. T-shirts and jeans are ok for the college kid look; at least entering the masjid know why you are going there.

    Assalaam walaikum,

The brothers come to jumma in sloppy attire. The t-shirts are short and not always suitable. Why are they going to the masjid with writing on the t-shirt. I don't care how cool it is.
Brother, the fashion craze here are skinny jeans..I saw a brother in skinny jeans at the masjid. I have forbidden my sons from wearing them. And they, for once in their teenage brilliance, have agreed. Men do not look right in skinny jeans.

In a masjid..dress to pray not to be the centerfold of GQ.

( the sisters were given a slight warning by our imam to dress more appropriately, and I had to agree..now it is time for the brothers to step it up a bit)

It's the norm in my country to wear jeans and tshirts and you only wear slacks and leather shoes and long sleeves to a social event.

as far as silk and gold are concern you could be referring to the chinese they love to wear those things. but for the native citizens i doubt you will be seeing wearing silk except for the silk necktie.

    Assalaam walaikum,

It may be the norm but men have to be aware they have a dress code. And tight jeans. short t-shirts are not good. Long shirts, tunics, athletic shirts are ok.

Why Muslim men want to look European is beyond me.

May Allah reward you for the reminder sister. Very beneficial.

It amazes me the amount of men that only show up to the masjid on Jumah with a clean shaven face, shirts with inappropriate writing or pictures, backward hats and pants so long that they stand on them.

As for the skinny jeans, it's another way to imitate Kaffir women under the guise of style.

A couple of my thobes were purchased online from a well known Saudi company that lists many of their garments as being made "50% silk, 50% cotton". The thobes I chose were cotton. I find it a bit ironic that a company makes garments often associated with Islam out of a material that is haraam to us.

However I do have to admit many if not most of my pants hang below my ankles. Actually if I point my foot my pants go almost to my toes. That's because most of the time companies that make trousers of my waist size think that if I'm that big around I MUST be 6'8" tall.

The good news (and yes, this is a shameless plug for myself) is that in the past year I've lost almost 40 lbs alhamdulillah soooo hopefully soon I can wear regular and not "Big and Tall" sizes inshallah!

But what gets to me is when the brothers show up in sweats (often dirty or stained) or in basketball shorts. I remember once when a handful of the boys from the school were playing soccer. They responded to the adhan and came to prayer in soccer shorts, most of them JUST to the knees. The shakyh told them to go pray at home.

But my biggest peeve is the brothers who go into rukoo or sujood and show the world their plumber's crack. Its far more prevalent than you would think. It is sunnah and therefore does not break your salaat if you lean forward and pull their shirt down over their exposure...but I usually notice it when someone is doing their sunnah prayer and when they go into sujood they crack a big smile.
