Man fined for slapping seal in Hawaii

A 19-YEAR-OLD man was fined $100 for touching an endangered Hawaiian monk seal.
Cameron Cayaban pleaded guilty in federal court to harassing, harming or pursuing an endangered species, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

Federal magistrate Judge Kevin Chang imposed $100 in fines and fees.

Cayaban was charged with slapping the seal, known as Kermit, while the animal was re-entering the ocean at Kalaeloa's White Plains Beach in March.

Cayaban's lawyer said Wednesday that the teenager had never seen a seal and wanted to get close to it, so he ran up to the animal and touched it.

Witnesses on the beach reported the incident to military police.
