Asslamo Allaikum,

What is it for society in General? What are the identifiable traits?
What is it for Muslims trying to follow the Sunnah? What are the identifiable traits?

Is it in decline for society?
Is it in decline for Muslims?

I am not really certain about this one. Masculinity has meant different things to different peoples. All of these definitions seem to circle around things like courage under duress, honor, battle skills, etc. You could also say it revolves around images of male sexuality, but I don't think this one is true.

Think of the homosexual relationships of the greeks, even with heros like Ajax, Alexander, etc. Or the casual man/boy relationships of the romans.

So, I prefer to think of masculinity in the former, instead of latter, role.

Among Muslims, our role of what a man should be is our beloved Prophet (PBUH). I don't have extensive experience in muslim countries, but many muslims I know make no real attempt to follow sunnah. So, I would have to say yes, I believe masculinity is dying out amongst the muslims.

Salaam Dear Brother,

Every culture defines masculinity. Every religion has a concept. Is it on the decline..No.

It seems that the notion of masculinity taught in higher education was the many faces of the hero ( Joseph Campbell ). We all are aware of the Judeo-Christian notions as related to us in the stories of the Kinghts. So in our minds we have qualities that define men: noble, generous, chivirous, and some a little dotty like our friend from La Mancha.

The economic movement of feminism told us we need the sensitive man. He was not the 'he ". He would drink coffee with the girlfriends...he was somewhere between a he man and a gay guy.

The symbol of masculinity was stolen by Hollywood. You have the cold and silent man. He can save the world. Men are quiet and strong. They don't speak they grunt.

Out of the sports world came our newest heros. They were demi-gods.

Masculinity is here. It is mostly found in pious men. Men who are strong enough to provide for their family and humble enough to thank Allah for it.
Men who understand that charity starts from home and are generous enough to share every blessing they have. Men who have the strenght to honor thier wives and mothers. Men who are faithful to their communities and seek to assist those in need. Men who quielty assist others in need. Men who will march to protect Islam without saying one word.
I hear them. I see them. I see their writings on this forum. They do not need to be heros. The Prophet laid the path and the men who follow in his footsteps are very masculine.
