Assalaamu 'alaykum!
The Hanafee scholars have openly forbade the means to shirk such as:
- plastering graves (tajsees) (1)
- building structures on them (1)
- decorating them
- writing on them (1)
- taking them as masaajid (2)
- putting lights on them (3)
- facing them in prayer and du’aa (4)
- taking them as places of festivity (5)
- travelling to them. (6)

(1) Jaabir reported that the Messenger of Allaah “forbade that the graves should be plastered (made into permanent structures) and that they be written on.” [Aboo Daawood, At-Tirmidhee, and others]. For more info on the position of the Hanafees refer to badaa’i As-Sanaa’i 1/320
(2) The Prophet (saw) said, “Allaah cursed the yahood and the nasaarah because they took the graves of their prophets as masaajid.” [Bukhaaree & Muslim]. He (saw) also said, “Those before you used to take the graves of their prophets as masaajid, do not take graves as masaajid! I forbid you from doing that!” [Muslim & others] For more info on the position of the hanafees refer to Tabyeen Al-Haqaa’iq, 1/264 & Rooh Al-Ma’aanee, 15/237
(3) The Prophet (saw) said, “Allaah has cursed women who visit graves, those who build masaajid on them and those who erect lamps (over them).” [Ahmad, At-Tirmidhee & others] For more info on the position of the hanafees refer to Al-Kawaakib Ad-Dararee, 1/317 & Al-Ibdaa’, p.189
(4) Aboo Haneefah disliked facing the grave of the Prophet (saw) when making du’aa; see at-Tawassul Wal Waseelah, p.293 & Rooh Al-Ma’aanee, 6/125
(5) The Prophet (saw) said, “…Do not make my grave as a place of festivity…” [Aboo Daawod]. For more info on the position of the hanafees refer to Al-Ibdaa’, p.185
(6) The Prophet (saw) said, “It is not befitting (specifically) to travel to any masjid for salaah except Masjid Al-haram, my Masjid and Masjid Al-Aqsaa.” [Ahmad]
