Misconceptions

(A Short Guide for Non-Muslims)

1. The Name all Muslims use to call our Creator and Sustainer is Allah. The word ALLAH in the Arabic language refers to the Only god worthy of worship, the One and Only Eternal God, the Creator of the Universe, the Owner and the Ruling Judge of the Day of Ressurection, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. Allah, is the Name of the One and only true God. The Name is not chosen by man. Allah is the same name of God in Aramaic, the language of the great Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) and a sister language of Arabic. The Name "Allah" was used by all Prophets since Adam and by the last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them all). Muslims worship Allah alone. We do not worship the Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him) nor do we pray to him. Our deeds are done for the sake of Allah alone. As Muslims we must declare and believe in the following testification of faith:

Ashhadu an lâ ilâha illâ-Llâh, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadar rasûlu-Llâh.

Which means:
I bear witness that there is no true god that is worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the 'abd [devoted servant and worshipper (of Allah)] and the Messenger of Allah.

2. The Quran is the Word of Allah. Allah revealed the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him) through the Angel Gabriel (may peace be upon him). Some people may be confused into thinking that Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him) wrote the Quran himself. This is obviously not true. Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him) was an illiterate man. The Quran is a great miracle from Allah. Allah sent down miracles to the Prophets (peace be upon them) that were appropriate to their surroundings. During the time of Moses (may peace be upon him) there was much magic and sorcery. Allah gave a miracle to Moses that was appropriate to his time. When pharoah (the enemy) gathered all the sorcerers in his court and they made ropes and sticks start to move, Moses was told by Allah to throw what was in his right hand (his staff) and it turned into a snake and swallowed up the magicians tricks.

«So the magicians fell down prostrate. They said: "We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."» (Qur'an, Chapter 20, line 70).

So you see, Allah sent clear miracles to guide the people. During the Prophet Jesus's (may peace be upon him) time there were many skilled jewish doctors. Allah gave miracles that were appropriate to his time. Jesus (may peace be upon him) was given miracles by Allah to cure the blind, to cure leprosy, and even to bring the dead back to life by Allah's Power.

During Prophet Muhammad's (may peace and blessings be upon him) time there were many skilled poets. Allah gave him the Qur'an as a miracle. Not even the best of arab poets during Muhammad's time could match the beauty of the Quran. Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him) was illiterate and could neither read or write so you can see how much of a miracle this is. The Qur'an is Allah's Speech and has the most beautiful words that you can hear. No one has ever been able to imitate or add to the Qur'an because of its divine and unique beauty. In the Qur'an, Allah challenges those who are in doubt about it to try and write a chapter like that of the Qur'an's. No one has yet been able to do it and no one ever will. Allah says in the Qur'an what is translated to mean:

«And if you (Arab pagans, Jews, and Christians) are in doubt concerning that which We have sent down (i.e. the Qur'an) to Our slave (Muhammad Peace be upon him ), then produce a Sûrah (chapter) of the like thereof and call your witnesses (supporters and helpers) besides Allah, if you are truthful.
But if you do it not, and you can never do it, then fear the Fire (Hell) whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.» (Qur'an, Chapter 2, lines 23-24).

The Qur'an is nothing like music or poetry. It is the Words of Allah, The Most High, The Most Great. This is a miracle which we can all have the opportunity to view and hear for ourselves. Ofcourse, the actual miracle can be seen and heard in the Arabic form as this is Allah's direct words, but the translation will give you a sense for the beauty that is contained within the text. This is the translation of Surah Al-Fatiha. It is followed by a link to a sound file which will allow you to hear it recited in arabic.

1. «In the Name of Allah, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful.
2. All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of 'Alamîn (mankind, jinns and all that exists).
3. The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful.
4. The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection).
5. You (Alone) we worship and You (Alone) we ask for help.
6. Guide us to the straight way. 7.The way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray.»

3. Some people may mistakenly think of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as being warlike. When one learns more about his true nature, one sees how forgiving he actually is. There are many stories to illustrate this.He never took revenge for his own personal self.
Furthermore, most of the wars that occured between the Muslims and the idol worshippers at the time of the Prophet (may peace and blessings be upon him) occured because the idol worshippers were attacking the Muslims. The Muslims were oppressed and they were defending themselves and their families.
Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him) had the best character. Amongst his many noble qualities is that he was truthful, trustworthy, patient, kind, forgiving and generous.

4. Many people have a misconception that all Muslims are like terrorists. Obviously, this is not the case. Muslims believe in 6 pillars of faith. We believe in Allah, the angels, the books [the orginal scriptures that were sent to the earlier Messengers of Allah such as David, Moses and Jesus (may peace be upon them)], the Messengers of Allah [the first of them was Noah and the last of them was Muhammad (may peace be upon them)], the Last Day (the Day of Resurrection when people will be rewarded or punished according to their deeds) and Qadar (divine preordainment).

Islam has 5 pillars. As Muslims we believe in the Oneness of Allah and that Muhammad (may peace be upon him) is His last Prophet and Messenger. We are required pray to Allah, to fast, to give zakah (charity), and to perform hajj and umrah (Click here to find out more about it hajj and umrah).

A Muslim is also obligated to maintain a high level of physical cleanliness. Making ablution for our prayers (a simple action of washing the hands, face, nose, mouth, arms, feet, and wiping over the head and in the ears which with practice only takes a few minutes), keeping our nails cut, and washing with water and/or wiping after urinating or defecating are a few of the ways in which we are required to purify ourselves physically.
We are also careful to keep trying to purify ourselves spriritually. Allah guides us to the best of character. We are to be honest, forgiving, just, kind, modest, humble, good to our parents, our relatives, our neighbors, etc. We are not allowed to backbite, slander, lie, steal, fornicate, commit adultery, etc.

As Muslims we continually strive to purify ourselves physically and spiritually for the sake of Allah alone. We act in the way of the Prophets (may be peace be upon them), not in the way of terrorists.
