Muslim immigrants clash with Greek police after Quran incident
Muslims protest alleged Quran incident in Greece

    ATHENS (Agencies)

Hundreds of Muslims marched through central Athens on Thursday, damaging shops and cars, to protest what they said was the destruction of a copy of the Quran by a Greek policeman.

The president of the Muslim Union of Greece, Naim Elghandour, said that during police checks at a Syrian-owned coffee shop on Wednesday, an officer took a customer's Quran, tore it up, threw it on the floor and stomped on it.

In response, about 1,000 immigrants, many from Syria, Pakistan and Afghanistan, marched to central Omonia Square, smashing several shop windows and five cars, a police official said.

Police sources said an internal investigation was launched into the Quran incident.

"We were told by police we will be given the name of the policeman who did this so we can press charges," Elghandour said.

Immigrants rights groups have called another protest for Friday.

Thousands of immigrants, many from Muslim countries, cross into Greece illegally every year seeking a better life in the West. Trapped in legal limbo, most have no jobs, live in squalid conditions and are often arrested for minor crimes.

On May 9, members of a rightist group attacked immigrants in Athens, sending at least three to hospital. Rights groups accuse predominantly Orthodox Christian Greece of not doing enough to protect immigrants.

So how does damaging shops and cars of innocent people make any sense whatsoever? And then we wonder why people think Muslims are violent terrorists!

The report says a police officer tore the Quran - not all the shop owners, nor the car owners.

A protest is one thing; wasteful damage to innocent people is completely wrong!

i have no particular love for greeks. i 've talked to a couple. they think muslims worship the Devil. they also send missionaries to muslim countries asking the muslims to not fast in ramadan. they say that their doctors say its bad for the health.

protest is the only way to get the minority voice heard in europe. i remember a time when asians used to be harassed by racists in UK. nobody used to do anything about it. so the asians took it on themselves to protect their own. voilent riots broke out. only then did the police intervene. otherwise muslims were free targets for racists groups.

    :salam2:

AstagfirAllah, I understand their fury for what happened, but is the excessive violence needed? Did they just pick random shops to damage? Think about those shop owners... maybe they were Muslims, or even sympathetic to this cause... sigh. These things just make all of us look bad. :[

I don't think anyone missed that - what I was pointing out was that if ONE PERSON stepped on a Qur'an, why are the Muslims breaking shop windows and busting up cars?? How does THAT help anything?

it does help and it doesn't. indirectly it does.

stamping on the Quran (astaghfirullah) leads to violence and protests. protests lead to attention. attention leads to better resolution and mutual respect.

looking back at my childhood, the best friends i ever made were the ones with whom i had a fight with. the same holds true for ppl, countries and ethnicities.

violence leads to mutual respect ( or rather, after violence comes mutual respect)

Tell that to all the men, women and children who have died in the last 5,000 years. How much respect have we got now because of all that violence they suffered?

why not? the evidence is clear: anti-semitism was abhorred only after a period of violence (WWII).

racism against blacks was only abhorred only after civil rights movement AND violence.

history is witness that mutual respect for two groups only comes after violence.

the answer is simple. the prophet Muhammad pbuh was being directed by Allah. He was on a mission. he pbuh, was a prophet a messenger.

Eventually he did fight when the Order came.
    Eventually he did fight.
    Eventually he did fight.

    Salam Alaykum brother,
in my opinion a protest is fine, but damaging shops and cars? how is that good? Not only does it show Islam in a bad way, it doesn't help anything! The police shouldn't be hurt either, but should be questioned as to why he did it, and should owe an apology to the muslims. I'm really ashamed that this happened.. The Prophet [PBUH] never encouraged such things. Thanks for sharing this with us brother, interesting thread!

[60:2] Should they gain the upper hand over you, they would behave to you as enemies, and stretch forth their hands and their tongues against you with evil, and they desire that you should disbelieve.

there is no non-muslim who will ever apologise. these are hateful people. they don't want peace. they only desire that you disbelieve.

dreaming that somebody will apologise is the hobby of the foolish

    Salaam,

What many forget is why the Muslims protested and it turned to rage. Someone posted the immigrants do not have jobs and live in squalor. The incident was the impetus for the anger.

We are not living under those conditions. We can sit back and be analytical. However, we do not have to worry about food for tomorrow.

As for the person who wrote that the Civil Rights movements included violence. Most of the violence was perpetrated by the police and quasi government agencies.

Please refrain from making judgments. We do not know the number of incidents wherein the Muslims have been mistreated; we do not have the facts on the number of times the Muslims have been abused.

    agreed.

if one looks thru the pages of history, one will see that mutual respect only comes after a period of violence.

regardless of whether one loses or wins, respect is gained only AFTER violence.

unfortunately the one thing a muslim will not do is look at history and learn from it. thus he is doomed to repeat it
