Asalaam walaikum brothers and sisters,
i'm looking for some answers and hope brothers and sisters of islam can help me find some answers ... here it goes ..

firstly, is there any hadith or any statement in the Quran mentioning about our obligatory or sunnah or nafil prayers.

secondly, why is the world divided in this regards with respect to farz, sunnah and nafil prayers.

third, why do people argue about rakats in prayers, e.g, farz prayers got 4 rakats (2 rakats farz and 2 rakats sunnah), zuhr there are 12 rakats, asr 8 rakats, majrib 7 rakats and esha 17 rakats, as far as i know to my knowledge and belief as to what i was taught.

therefore my question is .. why do people argue with the above statements .. like 5 total rakats in majrib and 13 rakats total in esha .... i know some nafil prayers are not obligatory and not sin if we omit them in some prayers but it is better to perform, my brothers and sisters as i lend up with arguments with some of my close friends with this matter i need some help supporting the whole situation with quranic verses or hadiths which one is better to perform while praying. kindly please help me with this question.

I'm afraid i can't give u details , but at least i can answer ur first question.Ther's a hadith in which the Prophet (PBUH) tells his companions " Pray in the same way that you have seen me pray " and the ummah prays the same number of rakaat as the Prophet did, both in the obligatory and sunnah prayers.
As for the Quran, go to Surat AL AHZAB (21) : " You have indeed the Messenger of Allah, a good example for anyone whose hope is Allah and the Final Day and who engages much in the praise of Allah." (swt)

You can also go to Surat Al HASHR ( 7 ): "Take what the Messenger assigns to you and deny yourselves that which he withholds from you.And fear Allah for Allah is strict in punishment. "

thank you brother for your time in answering to my questions, and the web-link you gave me is also a good site and very informative.. thank you again ....but i could not find wether nafil prayers are included with the 5 obligatory prayers and i know this are optional and anyone who wishes can perform.

like in some parts of the muslim world it differs.. as for us india we perform nafil prayer after 4 rakats sunnah and 4 rakats farz then 2 rakats sunnah and 2 rakats nafil to end the johar prayer, and like wise for the majrib adding 2 rakats nafil(i.e, 3 rakats farz and 2 rakats sunnah) which makes it 7 rakats and also for esha performing 2 rakats nafil after the 10th rakats (i.e, 4 rakats sunnah then 4 rakats farz then 2 rakats sunnah) and then performing 3 rakats vitr and lastly 2 rakats nafil to end with the prayer making it 17 rakats.

hence i'm not saying that other parts of the muslim world perform it wrong by performing 5 rakats in majrib and 13 rakats in esha .. it only means that they omit nafil prayers which is optional and it is solely under ones intentions, which is not sin. please correct me in this regards to performing prayers with how many rakats we have in all the 5 times prayers.
