Okay so I am graduating in May insha Allah...I have been approached by many people that I should go into the PeaceCorps and I have looked into it and it looks great. There is an option where I could go to Jordan.

What do y'all think? I mean I think it would be a great opportunity to help my fellow Muslims...

I think that if it's something you really feel you would enjoy doing, then go for it.
My ex Father-in-Law was an accountant for the peace corps in Panama for years and years. He just retired in July. When my son went there for vacation this past summer, he met the Ambassador to the US and he was trying to recruit him :) I would totally love for him to do that.
If I was young like you, I would do it. Especially since you may get to go to Jordan.
I wish I had that opportunity. I want so bad to pack up my suit cases and the kids, and move to a Muslim country ... it ain't even funny ;) If I knew I could live in a decent place, put my kids in decent schools, save enough to travel home every 7 or 8 months... and do it all on 2,500. per month...I WOULD BE THERE!!!!!!!!!! So again, if I were you...I'd go for it. Only if you feel it is something that you would find enjoyable and fulfilling though. :)

I'm sorry...I just asked my son and he said his Grandfather was an accountant in the Embassy over there, but worked in the section where the Peace Corps was run. sorry.

Asalaamu alaikum,

Woot, woot! Go for it!! =) It's a great oppourtunity, will give you excellent work experience, doesn't conflict with Islam (I think...), chance to make dow'ah, you get to travel and see another part of the world, live and work among Muslims ... need I go on? ;-)

Aww thanks for all your positive responses.

No I am not married that is why I am just like let me packs my bags and go! lol. I just get worried because all my friends say I need a mahram to go :(

Anywho I think Jordan is on the list because of all the refugee camps. There is also Morroco I believe. I do not know which one I prefer. I could use my French in Morroco and improve my Arabic there too.

About Pakistan...Pakistan used to be on the list for help. I would truly love to go to Afghanistan but I am sure that will not be for a while.

I agree it would be an excellent experience and most humble one to see a life that I have not lived. I am sure the people in Jordan will give me more than I will give them.

I have indeed done a pro and con list. The only con I have is leaving my parents for a while. They do not want me to go because of the entire downfall of the world. I am the youngest child, so they are really protective.

Pay and Living Expenses

The Peace Corps provides Volunteers with a living allowance that enables them to live in a manner similar to the local people in their community. Returning from overseas requires some adjustment, so when you complete your service, the Peace Corps provides just over $6,000 toward your transition to life back home. This money is yours to use as you wish: for travel, a vacation, making a move, or securing housing.

Iss there a place for you in the Peace Corps? Take a minute to read through this page, answer a few quick questions, and get a feel for your chances of becoming a Peace Corps Volunteer.

You may already know that all Peace Corps Volunteers must be U.S. citizens of at least 18 years of age. Here are a few things that might surprise you:

There is no upper age limit. In fact, the oldest Volunteer ever to serve in the Peace Corps was 86.
You don't have to know another language.
Having a four-year college degree by the time you're ready to leave for the Peace Corps will help your chances of acceptance. But it isn't absolutely necessary, and for some programs work experience, relevant skills, and/or a community college degree can qualify you.

To see if you might qualify to join the thousands of Volunteers who serve in the Peace Corps each year, take a minute to complete the following questionnaire. While this form is not a substitute for the official Peace Corps application, it will provide you with a general sense about your chances for acceptance
