Notes On Bid'ah

Assalaamu 'alaykum!
no such thing as good bid'ah:::::::

Imaam Maalik said, "He who innovates an innovation in Islaam regarding it as something good has claimed that Muhammad (saw) has betrayed his trust to deliver the Message as Allaah says, 'Today I have completed your Deen.' [5:3] And whatever was not part of the deen then, is not part of the Deen today." [Al-I'tisaam, by Ash-Shaatibee]

Imaam Maalik said, "Whatever was not Deen at the time of the Prophet (saw) cannot be considered to be a part of the Deen today." [Understanding The Evil Of Innovation, by Aboo Muntasir Ibn Mohar 'Alee, p.28]

If it is to be acceptable to Allaah, it will be found in the Quraan and Sunnah, abd would have been practised by the Companions.

---

The innovators are the friends of Shaytaan (Satan) since they give maximum pleasure to him as explained by Sufyaan Ath-Thawree who said, "Innovations are more pleasing to Iblees (satan) than sin, since a person makes repentance from sin but does not repent from innovations." [p10]

---

[5:3] The absolute perfect way t worship Allaah.

The people have not done justice to this aayah.

doing extra (bid'ah) is tantamount to denying this verse.

Islaam covers every aspect of life and the Deen has not left us in the dark in any of our affairs. It also teaches us how to fulfill every department of life, it even teaches us how to relieve ourselves from the call of nature. every matter has been left with clear instructions.

---

'Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn Zayd related that the Jews said to Salmaan Al-Faarse, "Your Prophet teaches you everything, even how to relieve yourselves." So Salmaan said, "Certainly! He forbade us from facing the qibla whilst doing so..." [Saheeh Muslim]

---

The messenger (saw) has fulfilled his mission faithfully and told us all we need to know for keeping to the straight path leading to Paradise and obtaining the pleasure of Allaah, and it is not possible that a Muslim can think that he can improve upon the knowledge that Allaah gave Muhammad (saw).

'Abd-Ullaah Ibn 'Amr reported that the Messenger of Allaah said, "It was the duty of every Prophet Allaah sent to guide his nation to the best of what he knew and to warn of the evils of what he knew." [Saheeh Muslim]

The Messenger of Allaah (saw) also said, "I have not left anything which Allaah ordered you except that I have ordered you with it, nor anything that Allaah forbade you except that I forbade you from it." [Bayhaqee, 7/76 - Saheeh]

---

It is obvious that the greater the information concerning the right conduct of worshipping Allaah, the more we are liable to maintain our practice of the Deen given to us by Allaah.

---

Aboo Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allaah said, "When I order you with something, then do as much of it as you can, and when I forbid you from something, then avoid it." [Bukhaaree & Muslim]

---

And who can be the best in worshipping Alaah than our very Messenger (saw)? As Allaah says, "Indeed in the Messenger of Allaah you have a beautiful example to follow for anyone whose hope is in Alaah and the last day." [33:21]

Who can be a greater fool and further astray than one who fails to accept he whom Allaah himself recommends to be obeyed and copied in every aspect of life?

---

It is important that we do not act until we have verified that the act we are doing is sanctioned by the sunnah or can be seen to have been done by the Companions. Each one of us are relentlessly going forward to the end of our period on this earth, thus it must be our concern that our actions are going to be accepted by Allaah and not wasted.

---

Ayyoob As-Sakhtiyaanee used to say, "No innovator works harder (in his innovation) except that he increases in distance away from Allaah." [Understanding The Evil Of Innovation, by Aboo Muntasir Ibn Mohar 'Alee, p. 22]

---

Hassan Ibn Atiyah (the famous Taabi'ee) said, "No people introduced an innovation into their religion except that an equivalent sunnah is taken away from them." [Ad-Daarimee - Saheeh] Hence it becomes easy for them to neglect the Sunnah and accomodate invented ways.

======EVILS OF INNOVATION:

Innovations by definition do not have any link with either the Messenger (saw) or his time, as bid'ah means something new, and something new is obviously something that wasn't around at the Prophet's time.

The right and the privilege to inform how to worship Allaah belongs to no one but Allaah alone. Someone who comes along and institutes a new matter in the Deen assumes for himself a prerogative that belongs solely to Allaah and claims by his behaviour as if Allaah includes that act in His Revelation. The innovators thus attribute lies to Allaah.

Since when did they think they could playpretender-prophets for the people? Let no one step into the shoes of Muhammad (saw) as it were and change the Deen that was established through him by Allaah.

=====NO NEED FOR BID'AH

Abu Dharr (radiallaahu-anhu) said: "The Messenger (sallallaahu-alahi-wasallam) did not even leave a bird flapping its wings in the sky except that he gave us knowledge regarding it"[At-Tabarani in 'Mu'jam al-Kabir']

---

be grateful in doing those things which secures the blessings and reward of Allaah

The Messenger of Allaah 9saw) said, "I am leaving you two things and you will never go astray as long as you hold fast onto them. The Book of Allaah and my Sunnah." [Al-Haakim - Saheeh]
---

Jaabir reported the Messenger of Allaah used to say in the begingin of his speeches, "To proceed; the best speech is the Book of Allaah and the best guidance and example is that of Muhammad. And the worst of all things are the newly invented matters, for every innovation is error and misguidance, and every error and misguidance is in the hell fire." [Saheeh Muslim]

---

Hudhayfah Ibn Al-Yamaan said, "Every act of worship that the Companions of the Messenger did not do, do not do them." [Aboo Daawood - Saheeh]

---

Ibn Mas'ood said, "Imitate and follow and do not do bid'ah, for what you have been commanded is enough for you." Ad-Daarimee - Saheeh] Is it not reasonable to say that if they chose to be so careful in sticking to what they had ben taught by the Messenger (saw) we shuld be even more so?

===========

Muslim adds in his Saheeh from Aa'ishah that the Prophet (sallallaahu-alaihi-wasallam) also said: "Whoever does an action which we have not commanded will have it rejected"[muslim]

Furthermore, one's Ibaadah should be performed in accordance with the manner of the Messenger (sallallaahu-alaihi-wasallam) and that is his proven, authentic Sunnah. Abu Daawood in his Sunan reports from Ibn Eesa: "Whoever does an action in a way different from ours then it is rejected "[aboo daawood]

=====GOOD INTENTIONS NOT SUFFICIENT:

Sufyaan Ath-Thawree said, "No word is accepted without action and no word and action are accepted without intention and no word action and intention are correct unless they are in accordance with the Sunnah."

In the story of the Ibn Mas'ood and his witnessing of the gathering of dhikr (see this post for the full account the narraion), Ibn Mas'ood criticised the people for doing that which the Messenger of Allaah (saw) did not do (even though what they were doing was in and of itself a good deed). The people replied apologetically saying, 'By Allaah our intention was good." So Ibn Mas'ood said, 'How many people intend good but never achieve it!..." [Narrated by Ad-Daarimee in his As-Sunan)

And in the story of the three men who came to visit the Prophet but found that he was not at home. And after inquiring about his good deeds one said, 'I will fast all my life.' Another said, 'I will be praying the whole night and will not sleep.' And the third said, 'I will keep away from women and never marry.' When the Messenger of Allaah heard about these three men and their 'good' deeds (which he (saw) never used to do), he rebuked them saying, '... I fast and I eat, I pray and I sleep, and I also marry. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me.' [Bukhaaree & Muslim]

This hadeeth clearly shows that the three people concerned did not wish to do anything bad wanted to come closer to Allaah and have their sins forgiven, but the fatality of their decisions lay in fact that they wanted to do that which is not shown by the Sunnah. They were motivated by the best of intentions, yet their intentions alone were not sufficient. In fact their intentions alone were going to be the cause of their doom!

==============

The Messenger (sallallaahu-alaihi-wasallam) said as is recorded by Ibn Khuzaimah in his Saheeh about the perfection and comprehensiveness of his Guidance: "By Him in Whose Hand is my soul. I have not left a single thing which brings you closer to Paradise and distances you from Hellfire except that I have commanded you with it and I have not left a single thing which brings you closer to Hellfire and distances you from Hellfire except that I have prohibited you from it "[ibn khuzaymah and ahmad]

whenever we innovate we seek to alter the perspicacious course of action of the Messenger (saw). It is as if by innovating we are trying to hide or obscure the one and only path leading to paradise for others. It is doing the job of the Debil in the guise of piety, a most effective technique to cheat the senses of the well-meaning ignorant people of the fraud involved.

Invent his own methods and manners of worshipping Allaah. Where is the logic of those muslims who after knowing the truth and the pr3scribed method and manners of the prophet (saw) still prefer their own ways!? Maintaining own preferences and choices in the face of guidance in the Quraan and Sunnah by adhering to innovations certainly invites the wrath of Allaah.

How do we know where the truth is? Who has the evidence? If evidence does not matter then how do you decide whose opinion to accept? Is Islaam built on opinions? Should you accept opinions without any text for it in the Quraan and Sunnah?

The Prophet (saw) said, "he amongst you that would survive after me would see great differences. So hold fast to my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs, adhere to it and cling to it tightly and beware of innovations for every innovation os a bid'ah and every bid'ah is a misguidance (and every misguidance is in hell)." [Aboo Daawood, Tirmidhee and Ibn maajah]

Ibn Mas'ood said, "The Messenger of Allaah (saw) drew a line for us and then said, 'This is Allaah's straight path.' The he drew lines to its right and left, then he (saw) said, 'These are (other) paths, upon every one of them there is a devil calling towards it.' Then he recited "Verily this is My straight path....."
