ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has officially demanded of the US government that it immediately take measures to remove from YouTube the sacrilegious video attacking the person of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and take action against the film’s producer.

After waiting for several days which saw the country erupt in violent protests and major cities turn into battle zones, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to summon US Charge d’Affaires Richard Hoagland and lodge a “strong protest over the blasphemous video”.

“This was an attack on 1.5 billion Muslims and a premeditated and a malicious act to spread hatred and violence among people of different faiths. All faiths need to promote inter-religious harmony and tolerance. The intentional spread of hatred among faiths is an attack on humanity itself,” spokesman at the Foreign Office said in a statement.

The Red Zone through which Hoagland drove to reach the Foreign Office has seen some of the fiercest demonstrations. Later a statement from the US embassy noted that Ambassador Hoagland reiterated his government’s position as well as that of the US leadership that they strongly condemnthe video. “The video was disgusting and was the act of one aberrant individual. A vast majority of American people have also condemned it,” the ambassador conveyed to his hosts.

Ambassador Hoagland reiterated that the US government had condemned the video’s content and its message and emphasised that the US government had nothing to do with it.

Ambassador Hoagland stated that the act of making the film was a deeply insensitive decision by a single individual to disseminate hatred. “It does not reflect the values of the United States, a nation of more than 300 million people, built upon the pillars of religious freedom and tolerance,” Hoagland said.

He called for citizens to remain calm and express their views peacefully, while underscoring his appreciation to the government for its commitment to protect the facilities and personnel of diplomatic missions.

NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Abdullah Hussain Haroon said the United States should stop the disrespect of Prophet (PBUH) in order to avoid attacks on their embassies.

In an interview to an American TV channel, Haroon added: “Must you (US) protect the freedom of expression by extremism.”

“If you (US) can protect the aspect of Holocaust being sacrosanct, then the Prophet (PBUH) is sacrosanct to us.”

US consulates made inaccessible
September 21, 2012 - Updated 455 PKT

PESHAWAR: Huge cargo containers are standing in the way of demonstration rallies, which might try to throng American and other countries consulates to register their protest against the anti-Islam movie on Youm-e-Ishq-e-Rasool (PBUH) here on Friday, Geo News reported.

Similar measures have been taken in Karachi where roads leading to the US Consulate as well as government installations have been blocked by containers, and additional security has been posted.

In Lahore, contingents of police are deployed around all sensitive areas to ward of any untoward incidents as the nation observes Yaum-e-Ishq-e-Rasool (PBUH).

In the twin cities, disturbances have been reported in Rawalpindi while the capital remains calm where the diplomatic enclave has been cordoned off by placing containers and heavy deployment of law enforcers.

Routes leading to US installations across the country have been blocked and police claim to have taken position, it will be a difficult day for the law enforcers.

All major political parties and religious groups have announced protests, as have many trade and transport organizations, and large crowds are expected to turn out after Friday prayers.

Shops, markets and petrol stations remain closed as well as public transport; authorities hope there is no repeat of the violence seen on the streets of the capital on Thursday.

Furthermore, protesters have been strictly warned to resort from vandalism, as it would only serve the purpose of anti-Islam elements.
