Palestine Needs Your Help. A letter from Justice for Palestine Association
07.12.09 - 21:05
Dear Supporter
We need your help today to support people in Palestine, especially the people of Gaza in their fight for survival. Earlier this year, Justice for Palestine Association delivered its first convoy of medicine to Gaza. As an exiled Palestinian, this was my first visit in many years to Gaza. I was truly shocked to see how much everyday life for Palestinians has deteriorated. Houses were flattened, animal farms totally destroyed, killing all animals inside the farms, factories were levelled with the ground. Even hospitals and places of worship weren’t spared from the destruction of the Israeli Occupation Forces.
People in Gaza told us how they are suffering from severe water shortages, with not enough water to drink, or for daily use - washing, cleaning etc. Gaza’s underground water resources have been diverted to illegal Israeli settlements and Israeli Occupation controls all water supply to West bank and Gaza distract. In some areas in Gaza, we met refugee children who are now forced to live under the worst conditions human beings can endure. People living at the edge of Gaza and surrounding areas are threatened on a daily basis by the guns and fire of the Israeli Occupation.
The Israeli blockade has entered its third year, aiming from the start to starve the Palestinian economy in preparation for the war on Gaza, hoping to weaken Palestinian resistance and then enforce their policies and demands after the war. Palestinians are facing economic meltdown as a result of Israel's illegal war and blockade, with 80% of the population dependent on food aid. All borders leading to Gaza, including the Egyptian border, have been closed for the last three years, with Gaza being described as the world’s largest open-air prison. More than 1.8 million Palestinian civilians are trapped in Gaza and cannot leave.
To meet this new level of threat to the livelihoods of people in Palestine we need your help. Your support will enable us to work with local communities in the West Bank and Gaza, giving them help to create a better future for themselves and their families.
On 7th March 2009, Justice for Palestine Association entered Gaza with a convoy of 10 vehicles filled with medicine donated by the generous British public, destined for Al-Shifa Hospital In Gaza City. During our tour of the devastated areas we visited Haifa Health Centre, a charity organisation serving in the heart of the area most devastated during the war.
Health Centre staff showed us around the centre and I was amazed that this small team of dedicated health care professionals are somehow managing to provide excellent service to the local population, despite severely limited medical equipment and supplies. During the war they were operating on injured people almost with no power or medical equipment. The Centre team asked us to help them with urgently needed medical equipment for the Haifa Health Centre.
Justice for Palestine Association are organising the 2nd convoy of medical equipment for the Haifa Health Centre, leaving Glasgow on 15th February 2010. We are also supporting 3 local projects to help alleviate the water shortages in Gaza:
1 :- Water Desalination Project
2 :- Water Tank Project (to provide water storage tanks for families)
3 :- Poor Patient Fund (to support families in need)
