Praise be to Allah (The Glorified and Exalted).
There are several important lessons to be learned from the downfall of Adam (peace be upon him) and the Iblis (Satan). From their story, the manner in which mankind and the jinn are tested is made apparent. Allah (The Exalted) tested the Amanah of Iblis by commanding him to fall in prostration to Adam (peace be upon him). Iblis, the jinn, fell from grace due to his feelings of arrogance and pride over his own creation. He became proud of his own great abilities and looked down upon man as being an inferior creation. This is evident from his answer when he refused to fall in prostration to Adam (peace be upon him), “(Iblis) said: ‘I am better than he [Adam]: Thou [Allah] createdst me from fire, and him Thou createdst from clay’” [38:76]. In similarity to Iblis, the shayateen (evil jinn) know the truth, they refuse to submit due to their extreme arrogance and pride for their own creation. Likewise, many of the other jinn act disobediently because they cannot control their naafs (sinful desires), to which they are tempted through their abilities. The manner in which mankind is tested is made apparent from the downfall of Adam (peace be upon him). Man is put to trial through the jinn. Every human has a qareen (jinn companion) that tempts them into disobedience. This is made clear from the following hadith:
Ibn Mas’ood said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “There is not one of you who does not have a jinn appointed to be his constant companion.” They said, ‘And you too, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said, “Me too, but Allah has helped me and he has submitted, so that he only helps me to do good.” [Muslim no. 2814]
