Greeting,
Sharp drop in hotel occupancy
as pilgrims start leaving.
MAKKAH: Occupancy of hotels and housing units in the central area around the Grand Mosque dropped by 50 percent Tuesday following the departure of many domestic pilgrims and 40 percent of pilgrims and visitors coming from outside, Al-Watan Arabic newspaper reported on Wednesday.
It said the prices of the five-star hotels near the Holy Haram dropped by about 70 percent to reach SR650 for rooms overlooking the Haram and SR500 for other rooms.
The prices of other hotels situated away from the Haram ranged from SR200 to SR400.
The newspaper quoted the chairman of the Committee of Hotels and Tourism in the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry Waleed Abu Sabaah as saying that the occupancy rate would decrease gradually to reach its lowest level mid Shawwal, which is the last date for the departure of pilgrims coming from abroad.
“The drop in prices is normal with the decrease in occupancy. The prices and the occupancy rates will pick up again at the beginning of the month of Dhul Qaadah when pilgrims start coming for Haj,” he said.
Abu Sabaah said the hotels and furnished apartments in Makkah were almost vacant with the departure of domestic pilgrims who comprised about 85 percent of the customers.
The newspaper also quoted the reservation manager in a five-star hotel near the Grand Mosque as saying that the room rates came down to SR400 from more than SR1,000 during the last 10 days of Ramadan.
The chairman of the National Committee for Haj and Umrah said the price hike during the last 10 days of Ramadan was natural. "Hotels and furnished apartments anxiously wait for the advent of Ramadan to make good revenues that would help them cover their expenses and make profits," he said.
