what is the perfect iftar time? during the sunset or after sunset at night?

In the Qur'an, Surah Baqarah, Aya no. 187 Allah says "and eat and drink, until the white thread of dawn appear to you distinct from its black thread; then complete your fast till the night appears"

Please help me by answering this question.

As-salaamu `alaykum.

It means to stop eating and drinking when you see the whiteness of dawn in the horizon. It is said that there are two white threads. The initial, deceptive one, and the second white thread (i.e. the appearance of day) which is when one should cease eating. As for until the night, it refers to breaking your fast upon the arrival of the night.

What is meant by the black and white threads in the verse on fasting

Is regarding the time of suhoor. In the Quran, Allah S.W.T says: 2:187: ......and eat and drink until the whit thread becomes clear to you from the black thread of the dawn.... Doesn't this mean we can eat until the sun starts to rise? Then why do we stop at adhaan of fajr, which is more than an hour before sunrise.

Praise be to Allaah.

What is meant by the black thread in the verse is the night, and the white thread is the dawn, not the rising of the sun.

Dawn is called the white thread because the first thing that is seen of the dawn is a light in the sky that looks like a thread along the horizon, stretching from right to left, from north to south. Then it continues to increase until it spreads through the whole sky. See Fath al-Baari, commentary on hadeeth no. 1917.

Al-Bukhaari (1916) and Muslim (1090) narrated that ‘Adiyy ibn Haatim (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “When the words ‘until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night)’ [al-Baqarah 2:187 – interpretation of the meaning] were revealed, I took a black rope and a white rope and put them beneath my pillow, and I started to look at them during the night, but I could not see any distinction between them. The next morning I went to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and told him about that. He said, ‘Rather that is the blackness of the night and the whiteness of the day.’”

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

Abu ‘Ubayd said: The white thread is the true dawn and the black thread is the night.

And Allaah knows best.

I hope the fatwa helps! The ideal time for iftaar according to some scholars (based upon ahaadeeth) is, and Allaah knows best, when the disc of the sun has dissapeared. It is from the Sunnah to hasten the iftaar, by opening it as maghrib begins. See this thread for more info.

:salam2:
Iftar (breakfast) time starts the same time Maghreb time starts. So it is exactly when Azan is announced. If you will perform salat aljamaa so it is better to eat few dates (3,5, or 7) and/or drink water then after salat you complete your meal. the last allowed time for eating is just before Fager azan is announced. and this is Souhour meal and it is preferred to be late

Okay so then should one break their fast as SOON as the adhaan starts or do we wait until it ends? I need some clarification on this as my family is divided over it.
