Salam,

one time I heard a Sheikh saying that "become a doctor,become a nurse but never become a psychologist." Iam interested in psychology but I am wondering why the sheikh said "never become a psychologist?" Is Islam against this? if yes why?

Psychology has now become the dispenser of psychotropic drugs. In essence the goal of psychology is to heal the ego. The world narrows to assist the client in defining his pain. It can be a process of hedonism. The focus is long term therapy
. So you spend a lot of time worrying about what is wrong with you. You dwell in your symptoms. You enable the ego to grow into gargantuan proportions. Why not fast and pray. They are active processes. If you give zakat it is still an active process.
In working with many clients I discovered those with faith healed. Those without continued to gulp down the psychotropics without heed.
There is a difference between a philosopher and a psychologist. Freud believed that psychology should study the soul...instead the Americans decided it is easier to dispense drugs.

well, i personnally think that u either missunderstand what that cheikh said.or more exacatly what he meant by saying this .perhaps he was describing any situation ....in which this kind of science is forbidden....

The important for me to tell u brother in this situation ,is that, u have only to

use ur logic in dealing with any thing.ask ur self is there any proof from QURAN or SUNNAH ? or wether it tatches them if not u don't care about it.and always take things easy.... wa allaho a3lam..

Make sure to remember that psychology is like educated counseling; psychiatry is the medical doctor that can prescribed medication. A psychologist cannot prescribe medication.

Syaikh Al Albaani had praised Physchology, what he hated from it is the Philosophy of it. So, if you learn book life "Tazkiyatun Nufus," by syaikhul Islam Ibn Taimiyyah and Ibn Qayyim Al Jauziyyah, you'll find a better Physchology, so if you find a Psychology Institute, do not use the Phylosophy and the ideas from those kinds like Freud's or Socrates or Plato's or whatever, but instead use it just as many Muslim have studied Comparative Religion, so that they will be able to REFUTE other religion. Using the book about Akhlaq and love to Allahu Ta'ala from Ulama as your main study in Psychology, and as your GOAL as well.
