I really like the way of Islam, the prayers, consciousness of god, diet and so forth but I have a couple questions

If Islam is so peaceful then explain the following versus

Sura (8:12) - I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them

Sura (5:33) - The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement

This sounds rather cruel and not just for God in my opinion. Can you also explain why there is so much war/violence in the middle east where muslims are the dominant religion.

Hello. This is a repost of the Admin put before. When taking verses you should always always bear in mind to look at the verses before and after, and also as to which context they were revealed. Taking them haphazardly and using them as evidence to show cruelty is silly.

It's like listening to only the part of the story you want to hear, even if the rest is relavent. Anyways, placed below:

_______

All your answers you can find in the following Links.

Those Ayah you put are not in context!! You must write the Ayah before and after them!

"Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not do aggression, for Allah loves not the aggressors. Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not aggressors. And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution is worse than slaughter. And fight not with them at the Inviolable Place of Worship until they first attack you there, but if they attack you (there) then slay them. Such is the reward of disbelievers. But if they desist, then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrongdoers." (Al-Baqarah 190-194)

Terrorism Not From Islam

Quran and Hadith prove Islam's Opposition to Oppression, Terrorism and Injustice.

Salam Alaikum Muslimmind

I seen another thread that you started about wanting to learn about Islam. Alhumdulilah that is a good start. But while you are trying to improve your knowledge evaluate everything before basing any conclusions. Samiha is right you have to read the Ayahs the are prior to the ones you quote or any for that matter and the ones after. You actually should read the whole Quran because in addition to this ayahs you pointed out there are a tremedous amount of ayahs that demonstrate peace in Islam. So to improve your knowledge read everything in its entirety do not try to take bits and pieces because this causes confusion or give misintrepretation.

8:12 WHEN THY LORD INSPIRED THE ANGALES, (SAYING) I AM WITH YOU. SO MAKE THOSE WHO BELIEVE STAND FIRM.I WILL THROW FEAR INTO THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHO DISBELIVE, THEN SMITE THE NECKS AND SMITE OF THEM EACH FINGER.

SO PLEASE CAREFULLY READ WHAT IS BEFORE AND AFTER EACH VERSE, I CAN TELL YOU GOT IT FROM ISLAM HATING WEBSITE OR SOMEWHERE THAT DOESN'T LIKE ISLAM.

5:33 The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom; (33)

I saw the quotes on a forum,

when I look at the Quran I still dont see a clear answer to the quotes I posted. What do these quotes suggest?

The point the sisters were making is that you should look at the verses that come before and after the Quranic quotes you mentioned. Let me show you what they mean

This is what you quoted from chapter 8 Verse 12:
I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them

And this is 8:12 and also the verse that come before it (8:11) and after it (8:13):
(Remember) when He covered you with a slumber as a security from Him, and He caused water (rain) to descend on you from the sky, to clean you thereby and to remove from you the Rijz (whispering, evil-suggestions) of Shaitân (Satan), and to strengthen your hearts, and make your feet firm thereby (11) (Remember) when your Lord revealed to the angels, "Verily, I am with you, so keep firm those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved, so strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes." (12) This is because they defied and disobeyed Allâh and His Messenger. And whoever defies and disobeys Allâh and His Messenger, then verily, Allâh is Severe in punishment (13)

This verses are talking about fighting in the battle and it is not a command to go out and slaughter any non muslim, if you want to understand more read the the rest of the chapter and i would also suggest that you also learn more about what the battle was about and etc.

And this is what you quoted from Chapter 5 verse 33:
The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement.

And this is 5:33 and also the verse that come before it (5:32) and after it (5:34):

Because of that We ordained for the Children of Israel that if anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land - it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind. And indeed, there came to them Our Messengers with clear proofs, evidences, and signs, even then after that many of them continued to exceed the limits (e.g. by doing oppression unjustly and exceeding beyond the limits set by Allâh by committing the major sins) in the land!.[] (32) The recompense of those who wage war against Allâh and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off from the opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. That is their disgrace in this world, and a great torment is theirs in the Hereafter. (33) Except for those who (having fled away and then) came back (as Muslims) with repentance before they fall into your power; in that case, know that Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (34)

I hope you understand what the sisters are talking about, we cant just quote just one verse of the Quran and try to understand what it is saying. It is very important to read what comes before it or after or even the whole chapter to understand a certain ayat(verse) of the Quran. I hope this answers your question. If our answers are not enough for you, i suggest that you do your own research and if possible ask someone who is well versed in the Quran.

Like the brother mentioned, if you're interested in knowing why there are so much violence in the Middle East, I would suggest you go further back in history. The transition period from Ottoman dominance in the middle east to British and French takeover.
Once you learn about all the double dealing and treacherous things these imperial nation did to the Middle Eastern and their lands, for the benefits of their respective countries (France and Britian), many present day conflict will make great sense to you.
You do not have to rely on our scholars or historian, even if you study the history through the information provided by Western scholar, it is safe to assume you'll come to the same conclusion.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Dear muslimmind;

Allah forgives all kind of sins except the sin of Kufr (disbelief) or Shirk (having associates in warship), For he is our creator, He can punish those of us who disbelieve.. We are his creation and it is up to him to do with us whatever he wills. Who are we to judge Allah [swt], We wouldnt even exist if it wasn't for him [swt].

Its either you believe and act as a believer to be rewarded, Or disbelieve and get panished.

As for the other part regarding the middle east..
Know that there are some mislead and weak muslims that have a great passion to the pleasures of this life and careless about Islam or other muslims. Thats why we have these wars between muslims where women and children are getting killed, and we all know it is not in islam to kill women and children and old weak men who cannot defend themselves.

Wars between muslims and non-muslims will go on and on untill Islam becomes strong again, For war in this case may be the only way to enforce righteousness.

And if you read Sirah (history) of the Prophet [saw], You'll see that he had to lead his people into war against Kuffar to defend and spread Islam as the only religion given by Allah [swt], and Elemenate all other religions of disbelieve and shirk. But he didnt always use force, Many disbelievers converted to islam after they meet him and seen what a great man he is. Same thing is happening in our days for some converts who witnessed some true practicing muslim fellows.

To fight in a war for the sake of Allah [swt] and his messenger [saw] isn't the same as to fight for the pleasures of life.

Verily, Allâh has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties for (the price) that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allâh's Cause, so they kill (others) and are killed. It is a promise in truth which is binding on Him in the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and the Qur'ân. And who is truer to his covenant than Allâh? Then rejoice in the bargain which you have concluded. That is the supreme success.[] (Surat Al-Tawba 9:111)
