    Question:
Is it permissible to write (S) or (SAWS) etc when mentioning the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), instead of writing out the blessing in full?.

    Answer:
    Praise be to Allaah.

What is prescribed is to write “salla Allaahu ‘alayhi wa salaam (May Allaah send blessings and peace upon him)” in full, and not to write it in abbreviated form, such as writing (S) or (SAWS) etc.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

As it is prescribed to send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in prayer when saying the tashahhud, and it is prescribed when giving khutbahs, saying du’aa’ and praying for forgiveness, and after the adhaan, and when entering and exiting the mosque, and when mentioning him in other circumstances, so it is more important to do so when writing his name in a book, letter, article and so on. So it is prescribed to write the blessing in full so as to fulfil the command that Allaah has given to us, and so that the reader will remember to say the blessing when he reads it. So we should not write the blessing on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in short form such as writing (S) or (SAWS) etc, or other forms that some writers use, because that is going against the command of Allaah in His Book, where He says

“Send your Salaah on (ask Allaah to bless) him (Muhammad), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic way of greeting (salutation, i.e. As‑Salaamu ‘Alaykum)”

    [al-Ahzaab 33:56]
And that (writing it in abbreviated form) does not serve that purpose and is devoid of the virtue of writing “salla Allaahu ‘alayhi wa salaam (May Allaah send blessings and peace upon him)” in full. Moreover the reader may not take notice of it and may not understand what is meant by it. It should also be noted that the symbol used for it is regarded as disapproved by the scholars, who warned against it.

    Asalaamu'Alykum,

Subhan'Allah. I was not aware of that, i will change from now on. Suprising though, the abbreviated form appears in books, like: Ibn Kathir's Life of the Prophet Volumes, although i guess thats the translator's fault.

It's much easier to use the smilie for it, which is :saw:

Just type saw with : on either side of it, ie. :Saw:, but all lower case

    aselemu aleikum brothers and sisters

not to be paranoid, but wolahi we have had such threads many times..and it seems like some people just dont care!

is it too much to ask? to write down subhana wata3ala instead of swt or salalahu wa3alayhi waselem instead of sws??

is that the love we have for our beloved prophet mohammed salalahu wa3alayhi waselem...soo weak that we rather say sws mashallah...
if our bosses at work or our teachers at school ask us to call them mister we sure do that!! we never adress them with anything else..because god forbid we may lose our jobs..or have a furious teacher mashallah!!!! but what happened to trying to gain ALLAH ta3ala's mercy???

please cut the nonsense..its not sws nor swt nor slamz or slem!!

Walihe I did not know this. Wow very informative. I am a fairly new member and have not read another thread like this. But in any event inshallah I will either use the symbol provided or write out (SAWS) in its entirely. :astag: May Allah please forgive me. Ameen

also people abbreviate and say ws wr wb<<< to mean Wa 3laikum as-Salaam wa ra7matullahi Wa Barakatu, which is wrong, the salam is a dua and should not be abreviated

the PBUH<<< does not equal Peace be Upon Him. and should not be abbreviated.

also JazaKallah does not mean anything other then "May Allah Grant(or give) you", It doesn't mean anything You have to add something to it.

You should say JazakAllahu Khair which means "May Allah Grant you with Good", this has a meaning, Jaza'kAllah alone doesn't mean anything.

    As-Salaam 3laikum Wa Ra7matullahu Wa Barakatu
