As-salaamu `alaykum.

To say that the act is a sunnah is a serious statement and of course, needs proof. However, as others have pointed out, there is no such proof, hence the act is in no way a sunnah. If someone heard an ayah and said it out of marvel that would be something else, but now it has become customary to the extent people think it is something from the deen, so of course its a bid`ah. Jazaak Allaahu khayran for providing the fataawaa.

On another note, although some of what has taken place is tragic, from what seemed very apparent is that the sister has taken a time-out due to a) the events that took place and b) her exams. Secondly it was pretty clear that it's something temporary, so we hope inshaa' Allaah that she'll be back when she's ready and that her exams go well.

I heard it was in the sunnah. But my whole, literally, whole family does this, and almost every muslim I know.

I think as muslims we have to learn not to drive people away just because of stupidity, I'm sure she will be back Insha' Allah.

As-salaamu `alaykum.

Even some quraa do, doesn't make it saheeh or acceptable though. :)

I don't think anyone in my family does that, well at least to my knowledge, walhamdulillaah.
