Manama: Children with cow's milk allergy (CMA) can safely consume camel milk as an alternative, studies conducted by Qatar's Paediatric Allergy-Immunology Clinics of the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have concluded.

The studies, the first of their kind worldwide, were conducted between April 2007 and February 2010 on children with CMA attending the clinics.

Both studies were designed to determine whether children with CMA could safely consume camel milk without experiencing the same allergic reactions as they had to cow's milk, Qatari daily Gulf Times reported on Wednesday.

The first study was conducted on 35 children aged between six and 12 months and who had CMA-related symptoms. The children were exclusively breastfed for 15.1 months (range of three to 24 months).

The research also studied whether a skin prick test to camel milk could be used as a reliable clinical diagnostic tool.

"The study was published in the May-June issue of the journal Allergy and Asthma Proceedings under the title Camel milk: An alternative for cow's milk allergy in children," Dr Mohammad Ehlayel, consultant paediatrician and head of the paediatric allergy-immunology of the Department of Paediatrics at HMC, said.

"Results indicated that 80% of children with CMA were safely able to consume camel milk without developing any adverse allergic reaction," Ehlayel, also a professor at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, said, quoted by the daily.

Children with CMA were previously advised to avoid dairy products and usually received substitutes that include soymilk or highly processed milk, he said.

"Although extensively hydrolysed and soy-based formulas are highly nutritious, they are also more costly and are not always palatable to children due to their strong state. Consequently, numerous studies have been conducted to find alternative sources of mammalian milk, including that of sheep, goats, mares, buffalo and donkeys, but this is the first time that camel milk has been researched in this way."

The second study, which included 38 children with CMA, concluded that 80% of children with CMA could consume camel milk without showing any allergic symptoms, while only 36.8% of them could consume goat milk with no allergic symptoms.

The research results were published in the July issue of the International Scholarly Research Network on Allergy under the title ‘Camel milk is a safer choice than goat milk for feeding children with cow's milk allergy.'

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations has concluded that the composition of camel milk is closer to that of human milk compared with that of cow's milk, and considered camel milk of high therapeutic and nutritional value.

Camel milk a rich source of Vitamin C
Also has a similar protein percentage as human milk

Dubai: According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, camel milk is "valuable food for people" as it is a rich source of Vitamin C.

"It is an important source of vitamin C for desert people who are unable to get this vital vitamin from fruits and vegetables," it states in its manual for primary animal health care worker.

Pasteurised camel milk can also last longer than cow milk if stored at 4 degrees Celsius, for more than ten days, according to research.

"It's shelf life is longer. Camel milk can remain unchanged for up to two weeks if stored at 4 degrees Celsius. The reason we keep an expiry date of five days on our products is because that is a municipal requirement," said Dr Peter Nagy, farm manager at Emirates Industries for Camel Milk and Products.

According to research, camel milk is high in iron and has anti-bacterial effects. It is also said to be a good substitute for children allergic to bovine milk because it has a similar protein percentages as human milk.

Easy to process

It is also easier for the human body to process because, unlike cow milk, it does not curdle. According to Dr Nagy, some benefits of camel milk have been proven while others remain theories.

"A few benefits have already been proven. For example, it has lower fat content [than cow milk], as well as higher Vitamin C content. We know from Russian literature that they used camel milk successfully in chronic hepatitis cases. We know that it could be beneficial in diabetes 1 cases," he said

Camel's milk more nutritious than cow's
Camel's milk is more nutritious than cow's, but should not be drunk unpasteurised as it can carry bacterial infections.

Camel's milk is more nutritious than cow's, but should not be drunk unpasteurised as it can carry bacterial infections.

The animal is a vital part of Arabian culture and tradition and its milk is an important component of the diet in the UAE and other Arab countries.

A recent survey on health and lifestyle by experts at the UAE University said one in every six UAE nationals in urban areas regularly consumes camel's milk and this ratio goes up significantly in the Al Ain region and rural areas.

Dr Riaz Ahmed Minhas, a doctor at Emirates Clinic and Medical Centre in Al Ain, yesterday said unpasteurised camel's milk can cause brucellosis.

"Camel's milk need not be boiled as much as that of cow's or goat's. Strong in flavour, it must be drunk slowly to allow the stomach to digest it."

The milk is lower in fat and lactose and higher in potassium, iron and Vitamin C. Clinical analysis of camel's milk has shown it to be 40 per cent lower in cholesterol than cow's milk.

It also has a low sugar and a high mineral content, with sodium, magnesium and possibly iodine – if it was present in the camel's diet – as well as a high protein content.

"Camel milk is good for humans provided care is taken," said Dr Minhas, adding his clinic intermittently receives patients from rural areas with brucellosis.

Brucellosis bacteria is transmitted to humans through unpasteurised dairy products. Direct contact with infected animals and environmental contamination through animal secretions and infected tissue can also cause brucellosis.

Dr Minhas said the infection causes high fever and patients need immediate medical attention. It can affect the liver, kidneys and brain if medical help is delayed.

The infection can prove fatal for the elderly. "Proper awareness among people dealing with camels and other livestock can save many lives. UAE authorities are very active in providing veterinary support to farmers," he said.

Experts said camel milk is very important for survival in arid countries. Somalia is believed to be home to 30 per cent of the world's population of camels, mostly one-humped, and they are mainly farmed for milk.

In the UAE, Al Ain has emerged as the leading agricultural centre. It is also believed to have the largest number of camels in the UAE.

Camels was domesticated about 3000 BC in southern Arabia mainly for its meat and milk.
