:salam2:
for a long time, I here these terms interchangeably. They constitute in meaning, to pray between the times of Isha and Fajr. In Ramadhan, Omar ra, ordered that we pray in the masjid the night prayers in congregation. The prophet, PBUH, refrained from doing this publicly because had he instituted it, it would have been obligatory among the believers to do the night prayers in congregation. He, PBUH, did offer a few nights of congregation night prayers. Do know that I am taking about congregational night prayers only. As for night prayers, themselves they are highly promoted by the rasool, PBUH and the sahaba, ra, and there are many hadith with respects to these prayers.
now the terms:
We have learned that they are call Taraweeh, these usually take place right after isha in Ramadhan.
Now in the last ten days but not limited to last ten days, in congregation, we have another additional series of ruku that come before fajr (they finish usually about 1 hour before fajr) this is referred to the last third of the night.
These prayers are called, Qiyam and Tahajjud. This is what you would describe the prayers of the night outside of Ramadhan too. The prayers that take place the last third of the night. But most don't make a difference between the two words.
You would call the prayer Qiyam, if you stayed up between isha and those last prayers of the last third of the night.
And if you slept after tarweeh or isha, and woke up for the last third of the night, this is called tahajjud. Tahajjud, because you are making Jihad, to get up and pray additional prayers.
this is just a side note and not something to get to obsessed with it. As if you mentioned any of the words that describe the prayer it would be understood.
So outside of Ramadhan, you talk about a night prayer you are doing: you would call it Qiyam if you did it before you slept and then prayed fajr. Or if you slept after isha, you would call it tahajjud, describing that you got up just before fajr or got up any time in the night to do these prayers.
