"When any one of you supplicates, let him start by praising and glorifying Allah, may He be exalted, then let him send Salah upon the Prophet (SAW) and after that let him make supplication as he wishes." (Recorded by Ahmad 6: 18, Abu Dawud 2: 162, Tuhfat Al-Ahwadhi 9: 450, An-Nasa'i 3: 44, Ibn Khuzaymah 1: 351 and Ibn Hibban 3: 308)
Personal Comment: The phrase 'Salah upon the Prophet (SAW)' means to ask Allah to reward the Prophet, to send blessings upon him, to ask that he be granted Al Wasilah [the highest residence in Jannah] and to mention him on different occasions where decreed [i.e. after his name is spoken, during Adhan and Iqamah, in Salah itself etc.] (Source: Abridged and Summarised from Ibn Kathir, Vol. 8, P 39)
