The meaning of "There is no compulsion in religion"

Bro Ayman, I think you are missing the point. Faith in Islam is the only way of success and only acceptable way to Allah subhaana waa ta'ala.

We can't go to disbelievers and give them dawah and then say "There is no compulsion in religion". Kufr and Atheism isn't acceptable in the sight of Allah subhaana waa ta'ala and we should resist it with all means possible.

As for the explanation of the verse, if you refer onwards from 2:04 in the video.

"That doesn't mean freedom of opinions. But it means that we can't enforce someone to believe in Islam in his heart. This can be done only by Allah. "

and it goes on to say :

" So the guidance of hearts is only between Allah's hands. And doesn't occur under compulsion, but occurs by choice. "

Arabic being your mother tongue, you would be able to understand it better from the video, than my post here.

May Allah subhaana waa ta'ala increase us in our ilm. Ameen

Wasalaamalaykum waa rahmatullahi

and jazakallah khair brother Ayman for addressing this very important issue. I was too tired and missing some sleep, so I couldn't write anything in response, although deeply disturbed by its content. May Allah increase your knowledge and faith.

I was replying to the use of 8:39 as evidence against freedom of religion. The video denies that Islam teaches freedom of religion and calls people who say that liars against God. This will most certainly be misunderstood by just about everybody.

There seems to be a major misunderstanding of what freedom of religion means. Because of this discrepancy in definitions, Islamophobes have been able to accuse Muslims of trying to impose Islam on the rest of the world by force. The clip probably means that Muslims cannot just sit still and watch people go astray without telling them about Islam. That is not imposing Islam; that's what Da`wa is. But to conclude from that that Islam does not teach freedom of religion is erroneous.

As someone learning about islam now, I have to admit I probably misunderstood the video. I feel pretty uncomfortable not understanding. What I got out of it was that no one can be forced to accept Islam, but fight them if they don't? That's what makes me uncomfortable. I can understand that if someone is Muslim (or Christian, etc) they have to follow the rules within that religion.

In a book I have, I read that Islamic governments in the past have protected minority religions within their borders (as long as they don't try and force their beliefs on the Muslims). True? Not?

I am enjoying learning about islam, but I don't want my lack of understanding to ruin my feelings about it. I hope that makes sense :)

hello Valerie,

I apologise that this post made you feel uncomfortable. The point being made in this video is that the only 'way of life' acceptable to God Almighty is Islam (total submission to God Almighty). Polytheism , atheism are not acceptable in the sight of Allah subhaana waa ta'ala . In order to counter the mentioned, God Almighty send messengers and holy books as reminders to return to the oneness of God Almighty (tawheed).

Therefore, if some muslims come and say "It is fine that we are muslims and you/he/she are/is XYZ as there is no compulsion in religion". Then this view is erroneous and wrong, as the only faith acceptable to God is the religion of true submission - Islam.

What we have to gain from this video is that we have to call people from other faiths towards Islam and not just say "There is no compulsion in religion", so you are free to believe what you want to believe.

And Allah knows best.

I wish you success in your quest for the truth. May Allah subhaana wa ta'ala guide your heart towards Islam. Ameen

I'm sorry, what I meant was that I was uncomfortable with my lack of understanding. I dont' want to make assumptions and I do want to understand. Thank you for taking time to explain it to me :) I appreciate it.
