Asalamu 'Alaykuum,
This is a poem that I wrote just now after I got back from university. Sorry for any errors... Please enjoy!
The only one alive.
By Ahmad Abu Khattab
Look at them staring; gazing with curiosity,
Their eyes of emptiness swarming your body.
Both strange and blood staring with hate,
Your thread of faith hanging on just barely.
Day after day, it becomes second nature to you,
An oppressive atmosphere lurks above.
Prohibited from doing that which feeds your soul,
Something that you have come to respect and love.
Looking back into their eyes you see no life,
Their soul starved from what gives it prosperity.
Their mind at ease by doing the same with you,
But you ignore their ignorance and continue with sincerity.
“Patience, patience” repeats in your mind,
As desperation sinks into your slowing heart.
Indeed it is patience that shall break you free,
From the shackles of oppression; you shall break them apart.
The lifeless souls try to silence your voice,
Nay! For your voice shall not remain silent.
Reciting the words of the truthful book,
Angers their hearts which have become lost and violent.
Distant from the whispering that comes from your lips,
Attacking your speech claiming it will get you in trouble.
A load of lies surrounds their motives,
But fear them not for in the end they’ll stumble.
So hasten in struggling to feed your soul,
Feed it that which keeps it bright and alive.
Those who fell are breathing but dead,
So learn from their mistakes and continue to strive.
When learning the truth they command you to stop,
Fabricating an excuse to justify their slur.
But remember their eyes are nothing but empty,
So to them the truth is just a blur.
In times of trials remember your Lord,
Who created and provided and protected you.
Indeed remembering Him will put your heart at rest,
Gradually but eventually you’ll no longer be blue.
A stranger you are in a world that is lifeless,
But do not be sad of this honourable status.
Wear it on your sleeve as if it were a badge of courage,
Until you depart to Paradise where you’ll be among the dwellers.
The dwellers of Ferdose who suffered like you,
Oppressed and poor, the ones who were true to Him.
For them is a reward for being patient in hardships,
Even if they were pulled apart, limb by limb.
Keep hanging on that thread that keeps you going,
For as time goes on it will become a rope.
Hang on to the rope of Allah forever,
In the times of hardships it will help you cope.
So let not the words of the lifeless faze you,
For they are lost and dead and in destructive strife.
For them is a punishment that is indeed severe,
Because they remain dead as I remain alive.
