It was a modest Wizz Air plane that was the first to touchdown at Dubai’s new Al Maktoum International Airport terminal, which is tipped to become the world’s largest in 10 years.

Early check-in: The first passengers at what is expected to develop into the world's busiest airport.
‘There is a lot of pressure to get the airport running,’ Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said of Al Maktoum International. ‘Its ambition is to be the world's largest airport and the world's largest hub.’

six airlines - Condor, Gulf Air, Jazeera Airways, Qatar Airways, Wizz Air and Wizz Air Ukraine - have signed up to use the airport, which is 30 miles south of Dubai International.

New opening: The airport is in Dubai World Central, which the government hopes to turn into an 'aerotropolis'

Griffiths said he was confident other companies would follow ‘in the coming months’.

He pointed out that 36 cargo carriers currently operate out of the new airport, compared to only two in 2010.

The new airport is situated in Dubai World Central, an economic zone the government hopes to turn into what it calls an ‘aerotropolis’.

Al Maktoum International is not aimed at replacing Dubai International, where expansion work is continuing, at least not for the time being, according to Griffiths.

‘If DXB (Dubai International) is to close, it isn't a decision we have to make probably for the next 30, 40 years,’ he added.
