UAE bans livestock imports from the UK

Dubai, August 07: The UAE Government has reinforced a ban on the import of all live cloven-hoofed animals and their products from the United Kingdom following surfacing of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) cases there, it was announced here yesterday.

The UAE Ministry of Environment and Water has directed the Animals Wealth Department to coordinate efforts with other relevant authorities in order to implement the ban.

The decision was taken after reports from the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs confirmed that animals in the UK were infected with the disease.

Amidst this development, the Dubai Municipality has stated that people should look for normal hygiene before they consume meat and beef.

Hisham Fahmi, head of the Veterinary Services Section in the municipality, said, “We would like to tell the consumers that the situation is very normal here. But people should take care of cleanliness and hygiene as a precaution. Meat products should be cooked in a proper way and one must take care when buying meat. They must ensure that the meat is fresh. The people should follow these instructions. But there is nothing to worry about and we are alert.”

The ban on the import of cattle products from the UK, including beef, has been in place since 1990.

Officials said that the new ban on the meat products and livestock from the UK was to ensure food safety in the UAE. “The government had not lifted the old ban. The same has just been followed up by a new one to ensure safety. Right now UAE imports meat from Brazil, Argentina, Australia etc,” said an official of the Food Safety Section in the Dubai Municipality.
