UK complicit in another citizen's torture
Wed Dec 1, 2010
Ahmed, 34, from Greater Manchester, says he was illegally imprisoned in Pakistan, beaten and had fingernails removed, the Court of Appeal heard.
He had been convicted of being a member of al-Qaeda and leading terrorism. This was when his lawyer said his conviction should be quashed because of UK's complicity in his torture.
He. who was jailed for life in 2008, was accused of playing an essential role in linking British al-Qaeda with commanders overseas. But before to his trial in the UK, he was held in Pakistan for more than a year.
When Ahmed was arrested, the US agents CIA visited him on the regular basis during his 13-month imprisonment, the Court of Appeal heard.
Joel Bennathan QC, for Ahmed, said he was visited by British intelligence officials. "We say the UK was complicit in these acts".
Despite notorious record on treatment of prisoners, Bennathan said the UK was complicit in torture and worked with Pakistan's secret service, according to the BBC. Such unlawful complicity meant Ahmed's convictions should be quashed, he said.
The foormer shadow home secretary David Davis used Parliamentary right to accuse the security services of this torture.
