Assalaamu alaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh,

I hope everyone is in the best of health/eemaan!

-My questions are back-:shymuslima1:

I was wondering about this and what islam says. As you know many of us might commit shirk UNKNOWINGLY :astag::astag:. So, the phrase or phrases people use e.g "holy molly! holy crap! could be shirk??? The reason I am wondering this is that Allaah is the HOLY one and associating holiness to something else would be shirk?? please provide authentic stuff from Quran and sunnah! I would appreciate it.
JazakaAllaah khair!

Sheikh Munajjid says

Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

“There is no holy place (Haram) on earth, not Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) or anywhere else, apart from these two holy places (i.e., Makkah and Madeenah). No other place should be called Haram (sanctuary, holy place), as the ignorant speak of Haram al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) or Haram al-Khaleel (in Khaleel, Palestine), for these places and others are not Harams, according to the consensus of the Muslims… We also use this word holy with Quran......Rest Allah knows best.........

oh no brother, you misunderstood me! holy molly is a slang that is used in the USA. I dont know how to explain it, but it has nothing to do with the haram. This phrase is used to express surprise.
may Allaah reward you for your efforts. ameen

Salaamalaykum waa rahmatullahi..

I can't comment if it constitutes shirk or not. However what I can point out is that the second word you mentioned is something that a person does in the toilet. It is something unpleasant to hear and shows bad manners. We should always refine and better our speech, rather than degrade it in order to fit in with what's 'hip' or 'cool'.

Also, one of Satan's plots in deceiving muslims is by preventing them to do good. Everytime we are startled, we should remember Allah azz zawajal. From the Sunnah it is proven to say 'SubhanAllah' or 'Allahu Akbar', when surprised or startled. We should cultivate such good habits instead of saying useless terms like 'Holy molly' and 'Oh my god' etc.. which provide no benefit.

And one should be mindful of what comes out from one's mouth. There is a good short video about this topic. Here it is :-

:wasalam:,

sorry, i have no idea tht whether using those words is shirk or not. but it doesnt suit a muslim to say words like holy crap, etc.

by the way, there is a beautiful dua for fear of shirk:

Allaahumma 'innee 'a'oothu bika 'an 'ushrika bika wa 'anaa 'a'lamu, wa 'astaghfiruka limaa laa 'a'lamu.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I associate anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I know not.

Holy means sacred/pure, etc but holy is also used for "Quran" or in a phrase "Holy Prophet of God" etc not only Allah so can't really say if it is shirk or not but if you go on to actually understand the meaning we can't because as sister said its slang its very informal word...but yea I agree with brother we can always replace the words with beautiful words...we are the Ummah of Muhammed (SAW) who was the bestest human being on this face of the earth with the highest level of manners and to follow him is the way to success if you get time you can read "Seerat un Nabi" he never used any bad words and moreover its we who made these slang's and its we who'll change the words of our expressions beautiful insha Allah becoming a perfect example for this world as a muslim.

May Allaah reward you respected brothers!
mashaAllaah ya'll have been helpful, alhamduliAllaah! brotherinIslam7.....I love that video you shared, it sums up everything subhanaAllaah!
I am trying to use the words of praise as much as I can....but sometimes these words just slip out of my mouth. astagfurullah! it's just that this word was so much used that I never thought of it as been "bad" until I realized it had "holy" in it and one of Allaah's names is "the holy one" and thus I thought of my question. alhamudiliAllaah I have my TTI family to help me....may Allaah reward you all!
Brother Tariq you had a point there....the word holy is used to describe the Qur'an and the Prphets (may Allaah's peace and blessing be upon them all) too and that could not mean shirk.
AlhamduliAllaah!

brotherinIslam7 that clip was Masha Allah a very short n sweet way to make us realize that the usage of these words which are very commonly used could have such a disaster if those will be anyonce last words (Allah Kareem)...

May Allah (SWT) guide us to be a better muslim Ameen!
