What does "unconfirmed private message receipts" mean

Meaning you clicked on a button beneath your private message box which asked to confirm whether or not the User whom you sent the message to was able to read it or not.
When you click this, the person who you send it to gets a pop-up when they open your message asking to confirm their message. And under your "track messages" are of the User CP you can view which Users who you sent messages to actually opened their PM ....
unconfirmed means they haven't confirmed/read it yet.
