What *things* did Muhammad (PBUH) own?

Hello,

What did Muhammad (PBUH) own? Did he have a house? What did he do with Kadija's wealth (sorry if I misspelled her name) or the wealth from his trades, and from conquering other civilizations etc..? Where did his children sleep and/ or in what conditions? I heard he had a camel/ horse (not sure which one) and a sword - was there more? He ruled over Medina, right? How did he handle the treasury of Medina or any other provenience within his control? If there is something I'm missing please provide all relevant information.

Because he was a prophet PBUH none of his family was allowed inheritance. So near his death he told his family to give all wealth to the umma, and he advised the people to take care of his family, food, clothing, shelter.

That is some of the questions you asked. and it would take a lot of writing because there is so much detail in his seerah.

yes, he had a roof over his head. owning a house was easier in those times. houses were simple structures and did not consist of ikea furnitures, tables, chairs, tvs, computers, coat hangers, dvd players, light bulbs etc

at times he freed slaves, at times he fed the poor, at times he reinvested the money into the capital earned. He was a self-sufficient businessman after his marriage to Khadija before prophethood, but he did not lead an extravagant life.

that came way later on, that money was used for the betterment of the state or given to muslims as war booty which was a common practice in those times because there were no salaries for soldiers.

i've never heard of this one. all important matters of Medina were voted upon (Mushawara in arabic, roughly translated as "taking suggestions or advice"). Muhammad was not the king of Medina. His job as a prophet was to give the law of Allah in the exact form as revealed to him by Gabriel. matters concerning the state were frequently discussed in Masjid-e-Nabawi in congregations.

the baitul maal (state treasury) consisted of zakat tax, personal contributions from himself and the people of medina, taxes and investment income. this baitul maal was not the property of Muhammed (pbuh), it was the property of the state. it was used for the betterment of the state and to provide food and clothing for the poor.


people in those times were not as wealthy as the middle class man of todays times. the number of rich upper class individuals was very little and the gap between rich and poor was very high. people's purchasing power was very little in those times and there were not many items to purchase such as playstations, televisions or cars.

building a house was easier since houses were simple and did not consist of chandeliers or light bulbs.

He (pbuh) owned:

9 swords for battle (one which he inherited from his father)
7 armors for battle
6 bows for battle
3 shields for battle
5 spears for battle
3 canes
3 robes (jilbab-like..worn in battle)
3 banners (think "flags") of black, yellow, and white (with some black)
3 cups for drinking water and such
1 bowl of carved rock from which he (pbuh) made his wudhu'u
1 box of sorts to contain his mirror and hairbrush, nail cutters, and miswak
1 Mikhala (small bottle which contains natural kohl) the prophet (pbuh) used to put kohl on before he slept (arabs..men & women did this back then)
1 big circular tray to serve food on, along with food & cooking utensils
1 bed
1 bedding (mattress like)
7 horses
6 mules
4 donkeys
4 camels
100 sheep (which he purposely kept at that number)
7 goats
2 lands

Yes he did..one was in Makkah where he lived with Sayidatina Khadija (ra)..which seems like he never went back to..and one in Madina which he lived in for the rest of his life and was built with simple materials..very humble house in other words...

From what I understand..her wealth and the earnings of the prophet (pbuh) were given as charity to poor Muslims quite often..to the point where the household of the prophet had nothing in it and suffered hunger and poverty like all the Muslims..especially during the time of the Quraish boycott in She'ab Hashim...

As for wealth conquered from other civilizations..that was divided amongst the Muslims as well..so not much if anything at all was kept by the prophet (pbuh)...

His children (pbuh) lived in the humble conditions I mentioned above..and they even suffered with him in the boycott..the conditions were so terrible at a certain point that *plant leafs* were consumed for food

I think this question is answered in the first question..however..I will give you further details on this matter at the end..so watch for it

Anyone with personal wealth had it all to him/herself..and they only gave the zakat mandated by Sharia..anything taken from battles..given to the Muslims..donated..given as charity..was immediately divided amongst Muslims or given to those in need..

Now..

I will give you the details I mentioned...

Though the prophet (pbuh) had the possessions I listed above he did not own them all of his life..he (pbuh) gave much of it away..in charity..donation..or as an act of generosity (once he even gave a robe he was wearing only because someone complimented him on how it looked and told him (pbuh) that they liked it )..

By the time the prophet (pbuh) died..he had ntohing but a small rug-like item to sleep on..a couple of robes to wear..a sandal..and a white mule

The only thing left to him..was a small plot of land which he asked that it be given as charity in allah's sake..and a small bag of barley through which Sayidatina Aisha (ra) sustained herself with for a short period of time after his death (pbuh)..

Any furniture..animals..armors..swords..slaves..servants..personal items (like clothes..rings..etc.)..even some of the chambers where his wives resided..he gave away..so there was nothing left for him or for his family to own or inherit..

and like brother pcozzy said..the prophet (pbuh) clearly forbade inheritance for his family..and even forbade charity for them!..and that is because he did not want people to give them more than they gave others (out of favoritism) and say it is "charity"..they only took what they could afford buying or exchanging things for!

So in a sense..even though there is a list of things which the prophet (pbuh) owned..he in reality owned them *temporarily*..because he died a man with nothing owned in this dunya
