The Prophet (May Allah bless him anf give him peace said), "Be aware
of Allah where-ever you are, and follow a bad deed with a good one
and it will erase it, and deal with people with good manners"

[{Tirmidhi, Birr wa silah, ma ja'a fi mu`asharati n-nasi, hadith
#1910}]

So whenever you commit a misdeed, follow it up with a good deed.
For example, read Qur'an or pray a nafl prayer (or makeup wajib
prayer).
And when the light of this act erases the darkness of the previous
act, you will be bestowed with true repentance.

Know, Sidi, that it is not possible to become perfect while you are
still in this world. And misdeeds will happen once in a while until
you pass away. And these misdeeds have a divine purpose, and that
purpose to remind us of our lowliness so that we do not feel high,
pious, and good - but rather feel humble and in need.

The people who are already humble and express their need to Allah
(through constant istighfaar and tawbah) require fewer reminders from
Allah of their true place.

You should make it a habit to continously repent to Allah by saying
Abu Bakr's Du`a narrated in the Qur'an (Surah Jathiyah), "innee
tubtu ilayk(a)." "Indeed, repent to you."

This should be constant thoughout the day and in all of your
circumstances.

Thus, the answer to your question, is that you should say the dhikr
above *immediately* whenever you can. And then when you get an
opportunity, you must erase the previous bad deed by following it
up with a good deed. And in such a position, you will be granted
the true repentance you are searching for.
