Ibn Taymiyyah on the authority of the Sunnah

Written by/Said by Shaykhul Islaam ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله)

Taken from Majmoo’ al-Fataawa

Shaykhul Islaam ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

“The Sunnah, that is a must to be followed for which one is praised upon following it and blamed for going against it, is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in matters of beliefs, matters of worship and the rest of the affairs of the religion. And it is known only by knowledge of the hadeeth of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) that are confirmed on his authority.”

A statement of Imaam Sufyaan ath-Thawree concerning sins
Taken from aj-Jawaab al-Kaafee of Ibnul Qayyim

Written by/Said by Imaam Sufyaan ath-Thawree (رحمه الله)

Sufyaan ath-Thawree (رحمه الله) was crying from night until the morning time. When he awoke he was asked, “Was all of this crying due to fear of your sins?”

Sufyaan ath-Thawree then took a handful of straw from the earth and said, “The sins are of lesser value than this (the straw in his hand) yet I cry only out of fear from an evil ending.”

And from the greatest of understanding is that man must fear that his own sins will deceive him at the time of death so one must evade from between it (the sins) and between the evil end.

The statements of Imaam Hasan al-Basri concerning sins

Taken from Qitaarul Mustaghfireen Ilaa Diyaar-ut-Taaibeen

Written by/Said by Imaam Hasan al-Basri (رحمه الله)

Hasan al-Basri (رحمه الله) used to say, “If you are not able to stand in the night prayer, nor able to fast during the day, then know that you are deprived and you have been shackled by your mistakes and sins.” - Ibn Al-Jawzee

Hasan al-Basri (رحمه الله) said, “O’ son of Adam! Abandoning the sins are easier than seeking repentance!” - Az-Zuhd of Ahmad ibn Hanbal

A beautiful statement of Ibn ‘Abbaas concerning music

A man said to Ibn ‘Abbaas (رضي الله عنه), “What do you say concerning Music? Is it permissible or is it forbidden?”

He responded, “I do not say it is forbidden except what is found in the Book of Allaah.”

The man said, “So you say it is permissible then?”

Ibn ‘Abbaas stated, “I did not say that.” Then he (Ibn ‘Abbaas) said to him, “Do you see that truth and falsehood will come on the Day of Judgement, so where will music be on that day?”

So the man said, “It (music) will be with falsehood on that day.”

Upon this Ibn ‘Abbaas closed with, “Go then for I have given the ruling for you.”
