As-salaamu'alaykum,
Umar (radiyAllahu anh) respected and honoured all of the members of the Prophet’s :saw: household; in fact, he honoured the children of the Prophet’s household more than he honoured his own children.

Umar once said to Al-Husayn ibn Ali (radiyAllahu anh),

“O my son, would that you visited us and honoured us with your company.”

Some days afterwards, Al-Husayn took up Umar’s invitation, but when he reached Umar’s house, he saw that Umar was alone with Mu’aawiyah (radiyAllahu anh); and that Umar’s son asked permission to enter but was refused entry. Discouraged from going any further, Al-Husayn left without even knocking on Umar’s door. Later on, upon meeting Al-Husayn, Umar said,

“O my son, why did not you visit us?”

Al-Husayn said,

“I did visit you when you were alone with Mu’aawiyah, but when I saw Ibn Umar return (without being granted permission to enter), I too returned (from whence I came so that I would not disturb you).”

Umar said,

“You have a greater right to be granted permission to enter than does Abdullah ibn Umar. Verily, you see this growth (of hair) on my head: That is because Allah, and then because of you (because of the members of the Prophet’s household).”

As Umar said this, he pointed to his head.

(Al-Murtadaa, by An-Nadawi, pg. 118; refer also to Al-Isaabah, 1/133)

Here, Umar expressed his love for the Prophet’s family members. For when one loses hair, or when one’s hair turns grey, one attributes those conditions to some stressful and painful event. Conversely, when the hair on one’s head grows in a healthy manner, one ascribes that to something or someone that he is pleased and happy with: In this case, Umar ascribed that sense of happiness first to Allah, and then to the members of the Prophet’s household.
