Zahrat Shaheed
By Ahmad Abu Khattab

Silence has fallen for a final time,
On our love that seemed to last for ages.
An ending has come but only for awhile,
An ending of freedom without the cages.

I write this to you with a heavy heart,
Throbbing, knowing what it’s letting go.
Tears are flowing as the pen runs dry,
So read it carefully because I want you to know.

I want you to know what you meant to me,
The love I had that was good and true.
So lend me your heart and read these words,
And maybe at the end you’ll have a clue.

I call you my rose that glitters brightly,
In the darkness that surrounds this dreadful world.
A calm sea you are while the storm is raging,
The perfect rose - the perfect pearl.

I reminisce at times about what we did,
As I travel with my brothers throughout the lands.
So many things did we do together,
So many times we held each other’s hands.

That smile you gave when I joked with you,
Or that look you gave when I was acting silly.
Never did I find a person more beautiful,
A rose you are – more beautiful than a lily.

When you read these words I don’t aim for sadness,
Rather I’m aiming to show you my love.
So if you begin to cry, then drop this paper,
And ask for patience from the One above.

Words cannot explain what I feel for you,
The woman who caught the ends of my heart.
But know this dear, I try my best,
Just like I tried from the very start.

Tell me, do you not miss the days of my wounds?
Shot in my shoulder – you cleaned it for me.
Your hands so gentle against my pain,
The love you had I can feel and see.

Do you also remember how you prepared my gear?
Dressing me up and zipping my vest.
Handing me my equipment I used for war,
Then whispering gently “May you get what’s best.”

So happy you were to play with the rifles,
I engraved your name in my favourite one.
My favourite because you found it for me,
While journeying out in the blazing sun.

Our patience tested throughout our time,
How many days were we hungry and cold?
But relying on our Lord, we persevered,
Our hope in Him we would highly hold.

The first time I saw you, you were with your father,
Running to greet him after returning from battle.
Lowering my gaze, I was lost in a trance,
Losing my mind like a lost stray of cattle.

You caught the heart of the humble sniper,
A man whose job meant leaving for days.
But you didn’t care because it was done for Allah,
And you knew to obey what He orders and says.

Sometimes you’d find me losing morale,
In a state of hardship where I’d lose my way.
But you’d inspire me again with your humble words,
“Ferdose my dear, Ferdose” you’d say.

Do you remember when I taught you to snipe?
While out on an order – it was only me and you.
You got so scared of losing control,
But I helped you out and your love for it grew.

That day we spent it in the woodlands of Chechnya,
In winter it was – it was gently snowing.
The night had come and we setup a fire,
That night under the stars your eyes were glowing.

When I’m gone I don’t want you to cry,
Rather be happy because I’d be with my Lord.
One day you’ll join me by the Will of Allah,
Because of how you lived it’ll be your reward.

I might have Hoor but they won’t compare,
Compare to you who would be their Queen.
My friend and partner in this world,
And in the next that’s of the unseen.

My ending is near as my pen runs dry,
By the time you get this I won’t be here.
By the Will of Allah I’d be a green bird,
Happily flying without a fear.

I wish to see your eyes once more,
Staring at me while holding my hand.
One day I shall come to see them again,
While residing in Jannah; a place so grand.

With my last drops of ink I finish this message,
My journey ends with my final act for Tawheed.
Know that I’ll still love you when we’re finally together,
In Ferdose Al-A’la, O Zahrat Shaheed...
