Assalam Alaikum
What do you all think about committees like ISNA already stating on their websites that Eid Al-fitr will be on Saturday October 13th? Aren't we supposed to celebrate Eid on the sighting on the moon of Shawwal or since we have come of modern/technologically advanced age we can make such calculations based on astronomical information? Personally I think the sighting of the moon is must and we should NOT go by such calculations but Allah knows best.

Jazak Allah Khair

I also belived that sighting of moon was a must. Here in Michigan there is a IAGD mosque (aka Troy Mosque) and they have been using a calendar based on calculation when the moon could be sighted in a certain region. They have been using this method for nearly ten years. And during all this time they never had to make any adjustments because they were never wrong. So after much discussion our Canton Mosque has also dicided to switch to this calculation method. I hope this will help a lot of people in scheduling their work plan etc. And I heard that ISNA is also switching to the calculation method. I hope and pray to Allah that they are right.

The thoery is that if the calculations are accurate then you will be able to see the moon on that day and in that perticular region. Just like we do not go out and see the horizon to determine the time of Sahur and Iftar, we go by a timetable. Only Allah knows the best, we just try our best.

This is an interesting website: http://www.moonsighting.com/

Assalamu alaikum,

I am getting really confused about Eid as this is only my second Eid and I am not sure about all of the particulars of the goings on.

First of all, I am aware that the day on which Eid is to fall upon is based on the sighting of a moon, but what is this moon to look like? I would like to see the moon myself as last year I did not.

Secondly, I would agree that pre-emptively setting the date for Eid is maybe not a good idea but of course, Allah swt does know best and if he didn't want us to be able to predict the day of Eid then likely Allah swt would not have allowed us humans to discover the technologies that allow us to do such things.

And lastly, I am very confused by the posting that ummsami89 made about Saudi already announcing that Eid will be on Friday....????? If Eid is based on the sighting of the moon they how does this work? Is it a time zone thing that they have seen the moon on Thursday night and it indicates that Eid will be the following day? Please help me to clairfy this in my head, I am getting so confused.

Jezakallahkhair,
Aminah :hijabi:

This is probably a dumb question, but what exactly do Muslims do on Eid? Never participated in it before, and i'm kind of confused about it.

This might be helpful Inshaa'Allaah.

The date for ‘Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha is based on sighting of the new moon

Salam sister,

Thats not a dumb question .
On Eid , you go down to an open field or a mosque to pray Eid early in the morning about 8 am here in my country , then meet and embrace your muslim sisters.

Usually for me , after the Eid prayers, i will visit my relatives and possibly friends. its a food feast and time to strengthen bonds.
