why do ppl say: may you live long life?

:salam2:,

when you do somebody's work they pray for you: may you live long life.

but wht about if someone do not want to live a long life due to temptations, seeing others suffer, life uncertainty?

can we pray: O Allah: dont listen to their prayers, take me up when death is best for me.

i think that 50-yr good life is preferred over 100-yr hard life.

...
Imaam ash-Shaafi`ee (d.204H) - rahimahullaah - said:

"O my soul! It is not, except a few days of patience;
As if the extent were but a few dreams.
O my soul! Pass quickly on through this world;
And leave it, for indeed life lies ahead of it."

First of all i would like to say that.. A pious man can't wait to die just to meet Allah his creator. But at the same time he would be sad when he feels that His end is near, because death will prevent him from worshipping Allah.
This is how every muslim should feel..

Now about wishing for youself or others to live long or wishing to die..
Ulama and Imams unanimously agreed that it is not permitted for one to wish for death to himself or to other muslims.

When Imam Shafi was dying his eyes were tearing and he said at his last moment: I don't know if my soul is to go to heaven so i congratulates it, Or to hellfire so i Condole it.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: Allah’s Messenger said, “None of you should wish for death. If he is a righteous man, perhaps he may add to (his) good works, and if he is a sinner, possibly he may be repentant (in case he is given a longer life).” (Al-Bukhari)

In addition, Anas reported that: "None of you should wish death because of a calamity befalling him; but if he has to wish for death, he should say: "O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me and let me die if death is better for me". [Note: Agreed upon on the authoirty of Anas, Al-Lu`Lu' Wal Marjan(1717)]

And to wish to live long is supposed to be for our best interest, because as long as you are alive you can always worship Allah and repent from your sins, in hope for Allah to be pleased with you and grant you Jannah.. But once you are dead there's nothing more you can do.

There was a question about this on islamqa.com.

It said that you should include 'a life of piousness / happiness :) (lol I can't remember)

Well that's what you should do. :salam2:

The answer to your question is simple: because the prophet, peace be upon him wished people a long life. Therefore, it is Sunna to do the same. A long life means more opportunity to do good, more knowledge to acquire and impart, more good deeds to add to one's register, more time with loved ones, the list goes on. The prophet's view of a long life for the believer was an optimistic one, as he tended to be optimistic, and so should we his followers.

jazaak Allah khair for ur explanation. but prophet (saws) also said to those who did not wish to live that may pray may Allah keep them alive when life is good and take away soul when death is best.

sometimes when u think about Allah and paradise, the desire to pass away frm this world increases greatly.

its sad to see that within a moment ppl loose their happiness, the life is so uncertain. the evil is so much that basic things like going to masjid and not making 'friends with other gender', becomes a big challenge for u.

Arabs say: "Atal Allahu Umraka Alatta'a"
"أطال الله عمرك على الطاعة"

My translation would be: May Allah grant you an extended life of obedience (obeying Allah SWT).

Brother may I know based on what you stated the part in Red? And brother if there is any evidence I would like to see it. Evidence for me must come from Quran and Hadhith and don't tell me so and so scholar said so. Even A scholar MUST refer to Quran or Hadeeth before he state something right?

I just need to be sure about that part brother.

(9) Narrated Sa'd bin Ubaid: (the Maula of 'Abdur-Rahman bin Azhar) Allah's Apostle said, "None of you should long for death, for if he is a good man, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil-doer, he may stop the evil deeds and repent." [Bukhari - Book #90, Hadith #341]

(1) Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: "When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious son, who prays for him (for the deceased)." As Salaam Alaiykum my brother,

Jazaakallah khairan for the evidence akhi.

Actually why I asked was due to the fact I was think from a totally different angle. Allow me to explain.
You said "because death will prevent him from worshipping Allah."
I thought from the angle that when we die and inshaallah make to jannah we stop worshipping Allah(swt). LOL How stupid of me. Now I realise you never was talking about stopping worshipping when in jennah but rather the early stopping of worship in this given life.
Now I understood. LOL
