UAE hotel erects 11-million-dollar Christmas tree

AFP – An Emirati man walks past an 11-million-dollar Christmas tree at the Emirates Palace hotel in the Emirati …

ABU DHABI (AFP) – Christmas came in extravagant fashion to the Muslim desert emirate of Abu Dhabi as a glitzy hotel unveiled a bejewelled Christmas tree valued at more than 11 million dollars on Wednesday.

It is the "most expensive Christmas tree ever," with a "value of over 11 million dollars," said Hans Olbertz, general manager of Emirates Palace hotel, at its inauguration.

The 13-metre (40-foot) faux evergreen, located in the gold leaf-bedecked rotunda of the hotel, is decorated with silver and gold bows, ball-shaped ornaments and small white lights.

But the necklaces, earrings and other jewellery draped around the tree's branches are what give it a record value.
It holds a total of 181 diamonds, pearls, emeralds, sapphires and other precious stones, said Khalifa Khouri, owner of Style Gallery, which provided the jewellery.
"The tree itself is about 10,000 dollars," Olbertz said. "The jewellery has a value of over 11 million dollars -- I think 11.4, 11.5."

This will probably be an entry into the Guinness book of world records, Olbertz said, adding that Emirates Palace planned to contact the organisation about the tree which is to stay until the end of the year.

Asked if the tree might offend religious sensibilities in the United Arab Emirates, where the vast majority of the local population is Muslim, Olbertz said he did not think it would. "It's a very liberal country," he said.

The hotel has had a Christmas tree up in previous years, but this year "we said we have to do something different," and the hotel's marketing team hatched the plan, said Olbertz.

The tree is not the first extravagant offering from Emirates Palace -- a massive, dome-topped hotel sitting amid fountains and carefully manicured lawns.

The hotel, which bills itself as seven-star, in February introduced a package for a seven-day stay priced at one million dollars.

Takers of the package have a private butler and a chauffeur driven Maybach luxury car at their disposal during their stay, as well as a private jet available for trips to other countries in the region.

And in May, the hotel opened a gold vending machine, becoming the first place outside Germany to install "gold to go, the world's first gold vending machine," said Ex Oriente Lux AG, the German company behind the machine.

:salam2:I don't know what remained Arabic in these people,Altough am half Arab and I love my Language and culture. I distance myself from such people they are not of me and am not of them.I feel no connection or whatsoever with these humain remains, they have capitulated completely. When I see other Muslims starving and going through immense catastrophes and humanitarian crisis,am disgusted of the contrast.Am sorry such extravagances can not be justified in the name of progress and openness .This is just another consume perversion.Instead of Arabic island they should give it the name of another western province .They forgot their culture ,their religion ,their language. They have sold the pride and honour .These guys need some Potency pill .Am Proud not to have Khaliji blood running through my veins when i see this.Just call me one of th sons of the country of one and half million Shaheed who died for Islam and the Arabic language.Every Arab will know what am talking about, especially the Palestinians.Marx should have said that Money is the opium for the people Not religion.Just another example of how his thesis was flawed is here in front of our eyes to witness.Wassalaamu Aleikum

Asalam alaikum,

I don't have a problem with other religious holidays, but this is ridiculous! Christmas is very commercialize and far too extravagant. Why in the UAE? What's the point? I think Christmas has been trying to outdo every other celebration for as long as I can remember!! What about feeding the hungry, or helping the poor? We shouldn't support such unnecessary things!! My mom puts up a Christmas tree every year and decorates it herself. It's beautiful, but I just don't see the point. I respect her and I even help her decorate it. She always fusses at me when I don't spread the bulbs out enough lol! Yep. That's my mom! :hearts:

I agree. I mean the U.S. is one thing, but it's like they are trying to imitate the godless western world that I was brought up in. Astaghfirullah! :girl3: They should donate that money to TTI! That would be much BETTER inshallah!!! Or towards Dawah inshallah... :(

SubhanAllah!
An extravagant pagan symbol (the tree it's not even Christian, it came from ancient european cults of Nature and fertility) and it is on the middle of a country of Muslim majority, and I'm afraid this symbol of shirk was put there by Muslims. Astaghfirullah! To waste money this way it's bad, but what this tree represents is undoubtely worse. May Allah protects us all from this..

Islam is a way of life
How much of that could have gone to Palestine or starving Muslims? But no, instead they got a useless tree which will die in 2 months to please the Kufr. Let us ponder this...
