Al Qaida mastermind Osama bin Laden is dead and the United States has his body, a person familiar with the developments has said.

President Barack Obama is expected to make the announcement from the White House later.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to speak ahead of the President.

Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden dead - Obama

Al-Qaeda founder and leader Osama Bin Laden has been killed by US forces, President Barack Obama has said.

The al-Qaeda leader was killed in a ground operation based on US intelligence, the first lead for which emerged last August.

Mr Obama said after "a firefight" US forces took possession of his body.

Bin Laden was accused of being behind a number of atrocities, including the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001.

He was top of the US "most wanted" list.

Crowds gathered outside the White House in Washington DC, chanting "USA, USA" after the news emerged.

'Lead last August'

Bin Laden approved the 9/11 attacks in which nearly 3,000 people died, saying later that the results had exceeded his expectations.

He evaded the forces of the US and its allies for almost a decade, despite a $25m bounty on his head.

His death will be seen as a major blow to al-Qaeda but also raise fears of reprisal attacks, correspondents say.

Mr Obama said he had been briefed last August on a possible lead to Osama Bin Laden's whereabouts.

It led to intelligence that the al-Qaeda leader was hiding in a compound deep within Pakistan.

The president authorised an operation to "get Bin Laden" last week, he said, and on Sunday a small team of US forces undertook the operation.

After a "firefight" Bin Laden was killed and his body taken by US forces, the president said.

Former US President Bill Clinton said in a statement: "This is a profoundly important moment not just for the families of those who lost their lives on 9/11 and in al-Qaeda's other attacks but for people all over the world who want to build a common future of peace, freedom, and cooperation for our children."

Mr Clinton's successor, President George W Bush, described the news as a "momentous achievement".

"The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done," Mr Bush said in a statement.

It seems like Pakistan is next.

We were after Bin Laden as early as 2000 but 9/11 made him enemy number 1 and that has not changed. I don't agree with most of the US foreign policy but I am glad the US has killed him. He was a mass murderer who killed thousands of innocent people. He now has to face Allah (swt) for his crimes.

I want to know how he died and everything.

Who thinks things are going to get worse?

I dont know if it's going to be worse, but insha'Allah it wont.
I would honestly love to live to see the day Muslims are NOT hated for existing. Although people will move onto something else. There is always some group to hate :/

Honestly, when I was eating dinner and I heard this on the news, my jaw DROPPED. I really thought he would have been dead by now, of natural causes and it would be kept a secret by his people or whatever they are to him.

Insha'Allah conditions will improve and American forces will leave the Middle East alone. I know this is easier said than done, but it is in my du'a each night.

Al Qaeda leader bin Laden dead, says Obama.

WASHINTON: Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed on Sunday in a firefight with U.S. forces in Pakistan and his body was recovered, President Barack Obama announced on Sunday.

"Justice has been done," Obama said in a dramatic, late-night White House speech announcing the death of the elusive mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the New York and Washington.

Does this mean that American militarism is over now. No more wars?

Regardles when actually Osama Bin Laden died, I hope making it public now is a good sign.

Allah knows the best.

They are ready to leave Afghanistan, in sha Allah. This is a step toward them leaving because that is what they wanted from the invasion, that is get bin laden.

Also money is tight, and it seems that USA is like mostly funding this thing.

Insha Allah this will make America loosen their grip on the Middle East now that the #1 thing they wanted is now dead. And it only took them A DECADE to do it.

Honestly, all I can say is that I don't know who this man was, what the truth about him was, what the falsehood about him was (what with all the conspiracy theories that exist)...I honestly have trouble trusting any media outlet when it comes to things like this.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala Alone knows the truth of this world and the hereafter, and not a soul can doubt that.

All I hope is that Muslims will stop being treated like public enemy number one from now on.
