Alawi Muslims

I was listening to the radio today ('Beyond Belief' on BBC R4) and there was a programme about President Assad, where he was described as an Alawite.
In the programme the Alawites were described as combining Islam with other beliefs, for example that Ali was a manifestation of Allah.
Are the Alawites Muslim or a separate religion?
Could you suggest where I might find more information?

Am I right in thinking that 'Nusayri' is another name for an Alawite, and therefore they are not Muslim?
As far as my knowledge goes, Shia, Rafidhi, Ismaili, this Nusayri' and Alawite are sort of the different sects of Shiasm. Some more extreme than the others in their Kufr [denial].

Like Wahabi, Salafi, Sunni etc are all the same thing, with different names.

Alawits are a shia sect. They differ in that they say that Ali is God in its human form, while Shia ( twelvers ) say that is an *imam* with special powers such as knowledge of the unseen/future

And alawits are the same as nusyriah. Their historical name and in books of theology and aqida are nusyria. However, the French colonization called them alawits as they wee his allies. They liked the name and adopted it.

It should not be called "Allawite Islam" or "Allawite Muslim" because it is just another religion.

But based on Islam? After all they believe that Ali, the son in law of Muhammed, was the physical manifestation of God.
A bit like the relationship of Christianity to Judaism.

That's exactly what takes them out of the fold of Islam.

Yes - creation which confirm the truth from time immemorial, including Ali(r) have not done or said anything to even remotely suggest Allah has a partner or equal. Allah has sent messengers, All Messengers testify him as a creator with no equals in creation.

For the first time looks like I've to agree with you. Therefore, this religion is not Islam.
