Pakistani police have arrested a mentally disabled 11-year-old girl after a mob accused her of desecrating pages of the Koran.

The mob demanded the Christian girl's arrest and threatened to burn down Christian homes outside the capital Islamabad, local media say.

Officials said the girl could not properly answer police questions.

Her parents have been taken into protective custody following threats and other Christian families have fled.

It is thought that the girl has Down's syndrome.

Paul Bhatti, Pakistan's minister for National Harmony, told the BBC that the girl was known to have a mental disorder and that it seemed "unlikely she purposefully desecrated the Koran".

"From the reports I have seen, she was found carrying a waste bag which also had pages of the Koran," he said.

"This infuriated some local people and a large crowd gathered to demand action against her. The police were initially reluctant to arrest her, but they came under a lot of pressure from a very large crowd, who were threatening to burn down Christian homes."

He said more than 600 people have fled from the Christian neighbourhood.

Rights activists have urged Pakistan to reform its controversial blasphemy laws, under which a person can be jailed for life for desecrating the Koran.

Many of those accused of blasphemy have been killed by violent mobs, while politicians who advocate a change in legislation have also been targeted.

Last year, Shahbaz Bhatti, the minister for minority affairs, was killed after calling for the repeal of the blasphemy law.

His death came just two months after the murder of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, who also spoke out about the issue.

Idiots. Straight up idiots.

I'm so angered when reading stuff like this especially when I know it's completely unIslamic. Yet, again, I am going to take it on myself to try to dissociate this incident from Islam and explain to others that this is completely going against the grain.

Astaghfirullah for the ignorance. May Allah save Pakistan and other "Muslim" countries from their own ignorance.

I second what you say.

Astaghfirullah for the ignorance.
The facts in the news report by OP might be distorted. . Sensationalism and story building by combining incidents feeds Injustice, and is costing humanity a lot.

According to various news sources the girl was framed by a local Iman who wanted to rid the area of Christians. He himself is now charged with Blasphemy after tearing pages of the Qu'ran out and planting them on her. People at his local mosque saw him do this and spoke up.

Assalaamu Alaikum,

So the facts finally see the light of the day. May justice prevail.

“ O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah and be just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety, and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.” [Qur'an 5:8 ]

“...... but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors.” [Qur'an 2:190]

It is actions from this so called Imam that make yet another black mark on Islam and detract from the message and beauty of it. I am somewhat surprised and bothered that people were ready to kill this girl for her alleged crime and didn't feel the need to wait for any evidence to come out. I think Pakistan's Blasphemy laws need to be changed and clarified so something like this does not happen again.

Assalaamu Alaikum,

Incidents like this give credence to the saying - 'The majority is always wrong; the minority is rarely right.'

The excess from those in authority/power is silently endured, not good. Time for the common man to wake up!

If it is true that this imam attempted to frame this poor girl and if I'm in the position of a Mufti, my fatwa will be to give him 100 lashes on his back. There should be zero tolerance for making up evidence regardless he was trying frame a muslim or non-muslim. However, let's the truth prevail first. Until then no body is guilty until proven guilty.

But people like that evil man who does the work of Shaytaan takes due credit away from the good Pakistani people.

Assalaamualaikum,

Its too bad to hear such things happening in our Muslim countries and communities. Everytime i go through the newspaper/news, there is something or the other which shows Pakistan as an "evil" country. Wonder why, the media publishes only "bad" things, out of which less than half would be true and rest all made-up or either fabricated by the officials and govt. Allah(SWT) only knows what is true. Becoming very hard to trust the media these days. Pheewww!!!..

Peace :)

We should be careful with NEWS, how do we know what is truth and what is falsehood? Has the so-called 'evil imam' spoken? What if he's innocent?

Yes one should be careful with news but some on here simply discount things because they are from a Western Media source which is ignorant. If he is innocent let him go, what if he is not. What if he did indeed do what he is charged with?

Ya muslimeen we should fear Allah(swt). Allah says in the Quran that we should not spread the news before verifying it.... Now in this case the munafiq lying media of Pakistan is portraying this girl as an 11 year old mentally ill girl.. Where as she is totally normal 18 year old adult. .. Astaghfirullah we dont have husn e dhan for our Muslim brothers and we insult and backbite them just because we read a story about a Christian girl.. How does she look like an 11 year old girl .. Here is her interview in CNN.

edition.cnn.com/2012/09/11/world/asia/pakistan-rimsha-masih-blasphemy/index.html

She was an adult with no down syndrome or whatever and the Imam is locked up by the shameless authorities.

Where in this interview does it say she is a normal 18 yr old adult?

And where in Quran and Sunna does it permit imprisonment of a young girl, whether 18, 14 or11?

Why couldnt she stay with her family instead of jail??

From the pictures that have appeared on the media. There is no way that she can be 11 or 14 and you should know the Islamic law and judgement regarding a person who commits blasphemy. If any one who is an sane and biologically an adult and he or she commits blasphemy then the punishment is death.

If you know anything about Pakistan then you would know that its very easy to spread fake news in the media and buy the judiciary. There is no enforcement of law..

What we do know is that the girl was caught red handed by the people of the area, burning the Quran and in a country which is supposed to be an "islamic country" . But the international media and their allies in Pakistan turned the whole case against the Imam .

yaani if we Muslims should remain silent at the insult of our prophet and our book and let the person committing blasphemy get away without any punishment then its a shame. There is so much fitnah now a days.

I'm confused,

It is reported that the girl is 11 years old and she has down syndrome. Pak Minister of Harmony reported to be saying she has mental disorder and "unlikely" she desecrated pages of Quran. If it is true she has mental disorder, it is immaterial whether she really desecrated the Qur'an or not. As per any law she is innocent and the Imam arrest is justified. But why an 11 years old girl with mental disorder was arrested and still in custody? Does not make any sense to me.

It is also reported that she is a Christian girl, why call her action (assuming she really did it) as blasphemy? She is Christian not Muslim girl!!

The latest, she is believed to be 18 not 11 years old and she has no down syndrome, really? And was caught red handed for desecrating Qur'an. So why on earth the Imam was arrested?

If I correctly understand all the news, both the girl (the accused) and the Imam (the accuser) have been arrested. What on earth is happening?

I think better we leave the matter to the rocket scientists to solve it.

There is no information that she is 18. You are making huge assumptions based on her photograph -- which, with respect, as a man you should not be looking at anyway. To me, she looks like a teenage girl. Besides, in Islam, a girl remains in the custody of her father until she is married. She does not "become an adult" once she hits her 18th birthday.

Furthermore, she was not caught red-handed. Where do you get such information? She was caught with a garbage bag that had burned pages of the Quran in it. She was not caught burning the Quran.

Seriously, the way people on this forum twist things, its a disgrace.

Precious Star,

Don't be too emotionally. You too making assumptions. How do you know she is 11? You said "To me she looks like a teenage girl..." this is assumption as well. "Furthermore, she was not caught red-handed", another assumptions. I think you too rely on news from sicked western media. Other comments here are also based on news including that she was caught red handed. No one making up story but in reference to the same media. If you frankly look at the comments from everyone, all have sympathy to this girl. We are not Dracula, human just like you. We too want the truth to prevail not based on assumptions. An Imam being accused and potentially innocent girl is being accused as well. One of them could be innocent, not be both. If the imam is innocent, let the truth prevail. I don't want to mock an innocent man, in case he is innocent. I hope the girl is innocent, regardless her religion background. If she is mentally retarded, I don't see any sin she committed. But what is the truth? You will never get the truth from sicked western media. Until then no body is guilty until proven guilty. Why there are so much of cries because of this girl? Hundred of innocent children killed daily in Palestine, Syria and kids are arrested and tortured in Kashmir region in the name of terrorism. They are thousand of child labours all over the world. where is the attention, no one crying about it? Now, stop making assumption about me. Pls read all my post here before you judge me.

I sincerely hope you stop being emotional and jumping the gun.

Usually mentally retarded children become fat because they cannot play with other children. They just sit at one corner and giggle. This is my experience. If you do not see their face up close (not photo) you would not be able to guess his/her age.

Now if see a girl is burning pages of The Noble Quran I would tell her not to do that and take the pages away from her. But this imam tried to stir up a muslim christen riot. I am very suspicious about the intention of this imam even before the western media try to tell me any thing.

How many of you think that this imam never lied in his life?

If this girl is innocent, and she raises her hand then muslims, be prepared for worst.

May Allah Subhanu wa Taa'la forgive me if I have written some thing wrong.
