Putting One’s Trust In Allah And Taking Measures

Seeking Allah's Mercy

Qul HuwaAllahu Ahud!
Asalamo`Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh,

Praise be to Allaah.
Putting one’s trust in Allah involves two things:

(i) Depending on Allah and believing that He is the One Who causes measures to be effective; His decree comes to pass; He has decreed all things, counted them out and ordained them, may He be glorified and exalted.

(ii) Taking appropriate measures; putting one’s trust in Allah does not mean refraining from taking measures; rather part of putting one’s trust in Allah is taking appropriate measures and striving to do so. The one who refrains from doing so has gone against the laws and decree of Allah. Allah has commanded us to take appropriate measures and He encourages us to do so; He commanded His Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) to do that.

So it is not permissible for the believer to refrain from taking appropriate measures; in fact he is not truly putting his trust in Allah unless he takes appropriate measures. Hence it is prescribed to get married in order to have a child, and it is enjoined to have intercourse. If someone were to say: I shall not get married and I shall wait to have a child without getting married, he would be regarded as insane; this is not the way of those who are wise and rational. Similarly, he should not sit in his house or in the mosque seeking charity and waiting for provision to come to him; rather he should strive hard and work to seek to earn halaal provision.

Maryam (may Allah have mercy on her) did not forgo taking measures. Allah said to her (interpretation of the meaning):

“And shake the trunk of date-palm towards you, it will let fall fresh ripe-dates upon you” [Maryam 19:25].

So she shook the palm tree and took appropriate measures until the dates fell. Her action is not contrary to taking measures and the fact that she found provision with her and that Allah honoured her and gave her some provision does not indicate that she refrained from taking appropriate measures; rather she devoted herself to worship and also took appropriate measures.

If Allah bestows upon some of His close friends some miracles (karaamaat), this is by His grace and bounty, but that does not indicate that we should forgo taking appropriate measures. It is proven that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:

“Strive to do that which will benefit you and seek the help of Allaah, and do not feel helpless.” Narrated by Muslim, 2664.

And Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything)” [al-Faatihah 1:5].

Baarak'Allahu feeki ukthii. This reminds me of a lecture I heard. I think it was by Sheikh Anwar Al-Awlaki rahimahullah. He basically defined the word tawakul, and he mentioned the following hadith: From Umar ibn Al-Khattab from the Prophet (salahu alaihi wa sallam) who said: "If only you relied on Allah a true reliance, He would provide sustenance for you just as He does the birds: They fly out in the morning empty and return in the afternoon with full stomachs." (Ahmad, An-Nasaa’I, Ibn Majah, Al-Hakim and At-Tirmidhi who said: "Hassan sahih). The key point is that the birds fly out to get their sustenance.

Walaikum Salaam,

Trust in Allah

3:122. ...And in Allah should the believers put their trust.

Chapter 3 - Surah Al-Imran
159.
...Put your trust in Allah, certainly, Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him).
160. If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you? And in Allah (Alone) let believers put their trust.

4:81. ...And put your trust in Allah. And Allah is Ever All-Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs.

5:11. ...So fear Allah. And in Allah let believers put their trust.

5:23. ...And put your trust in Allah if you are believers indeed.

7:89. [Shu'aib (AS) said:] "...In Allah (Alone) we put our trust..."

8:2. ...And they (the believers) put their trust in their Lord (Alone)

8:49. ...Whoever puts his trust in Allah, then surely, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

8:61. ...And (put your) trust in Allah. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.

9:51. Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our Maula (Lord, Helper and Protector)." And in Allah let the believers put their trust.

9:129. But if they turn away, say (O Muhammad SAW): "Allah is sufficient for me. None has the right to be worshipped but He, in Him I put my trust and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne."

10:71. [Nuh (AS) said:] "...I put my trust in Allah..."

Chapter 10 - Surah Yunus
84.
And Musa (Moses) said: "O my people! If you have believed in Allah, then put your trust in Him if you are Muslims (those who submit to Allah's Will)."
85. They said: "In Allah we put our trust. Our Lord! Make us not a trial for the folk who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doing) (i.e. do not make them overpower us).
86. "And save us by Your Mercy from the disbelieving folk."

11:56. [Hud (AS) said:] "I put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord!..."

11:88. [Shu’aib (AS) said:] "...And my guidance cannot come except from Allah, in Him I trust and unto Him I repent."

11:123. ...So worship Him (O Muhammad SAW) and put your trust in Him. And your Lord is not unaware of what you (people) do.

12:67. [Ya'qub (AS) said:] "...In Him (Allah), I put my trust and let all those that trust, put their trust in Him."

13:30. ...Say: (O Muhammad SAW) "He is my Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but He! In Him is my trust, and to Him will be my return with repentance."

Chapter 14 - Surah Ibrahim
11.
[The Messengers [Nuh (AS), Hud (AS), Salih (AS)] said to their people:] "...And in Allah (Alone) let the believers put their trust,
12. And why should we not put our trust in Allah while He indeed has guided us our ways. And we shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us, and in Allah (Alone) let those who trust, put their trust."

Chapter 16 - Surah An-Nahl
41.
And as for those who emigrated for the Cause of Allah, after suffering oppression, We will certainly give them goodly residence in this world, but indeed the reward of the Hereafter will be greater, if they but knew!
42. (They are) those who remained patient (in this world for Allah's sake), and put their trust in their Lord (Allah Alone).

Chapter 16 - Surah An-Nahl
98.
So when you want to recite the Qur'an, seek refuge with Allah from Shaitan (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one).
99. Verily! He (Shaitan) has no power over those who believe and put their trust only in their Lord (Allah).

Chapter 25 - Surah Al-Furqan
58.
And put your trust (O Muhammad SAW) in the Ever Living One Who dies not, and glorify His Praises, and Sufficient is He as the All-Knower of the sins of His slaves;
59. Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six Days...

26:217. And (O Muhammad SAW) put your trust in the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

27:79. So put your trust in Allah; surely, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on manifest truth.

Chapter 29 - Surah Al-'Ankabut
58.
And those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, to them We shall surely give lofty dwellings in Paradise, underneath which rivers flow, to live therein forever. Excellent is the reward of the workers.
59. Those who are patient, and put their trust (only) in their Lord (Allah).

33:3. And put your trust (O Muhammad SAW) in Allah, and Sufficient is Allah as a Wakil (Trustee, or Disposer of affairs).

33:48. ...And put your trust in Allah, and Sufficient is Allah as a Wakil (Trustee, or Disposer of affairs).

39:38. ...Say: [O Muhammad (SAW)] ..."Sufficient for me is Allah; in Him those who trust (i.e. believers) must put their trust."

42:10. [Say: O Muhammad (SAW)] ..."Such is Allah, my Lord in Whom I put my trust, and to Him I turn in all of my affairs and in repentance."

42:36. ...(Paradise) is better and more lasting for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and put their trust in their Lord (concerning all of their affairs).

58:10. ...And in Allah let the believers put their trust.

60:4. ..." Our Lord! In You (Alone) we put our trust, and to You (Alone) we turn in repentance, and to You (Alone) is (our) final Return"

64:13. Allah! None has the right to be worshipped but He, and in Allah (Alone), therefore, let the believers put their trust.

67:29. Say (O Muhammad SAW): "He is the Most Beneficent (Allah), in Him we believe, and in Him we put our trust..."

Chapter 65 - Surah At-Talaq
2. ...And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty).
3. And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allah has set a measure for all things.

2:256. ...Whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.
31:22. And whosoever submits his face (himself) to Allah, while he is a Muhsin (good-doer), then he has grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold. And to Allah return all matters for decision.

3:173. ..."Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)."
6:102. ...So worship Him (Alone), and He is the Wakil (Trustee, Disposer of affairs, Guardian, etc.) over all things.
11:12. ...And Allah is a Wakil (Disposer of affairs, Trustee, Guardian, etc.) over all things.
39:62. Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the Wakil (Trustee, Disposer of affairs, Guardian, etc.) over all things.
