I'm scared of death

Assalaam walaikum. Long time no see, my brothers and sisters. Been busy in my college life.

Recently news of deaths of celebrities and people related to my acquaintances have brought out fear in me. Whenever I look at my reflection in the mirror, my eyes are unreasonably filled with fear, making me avoid looking at my reflection.

I'm scared of my own death. I don't want to die. I've seen news of deaths earlier but I didn't let them bother me. But now...

I have many things to do. I have some things to achieve. I don't want to die leaving my family and friends. I can't afford to. I still have to make my family revert to Islam. I want to go to Hajj with them...I want to clear away my sins...

I'm very afraid now. What to do?

Walaikum asssalam, sis! :)

Read this:

Every human will definitely experience the life of grave, whether s/he is buried underground after death, whether stays deep down the sea having been drowned, or is eaten by a predator, or thrown as ash into air after being cremated...
As the torment of the grave and questioning is also addressed to the spirit, even if the corpse of the deceased is not in the grave, s/he will experience the questioning and- if s/he deserves-the torment of the grave. Even if corpses are buried underground, they rot after some time. Therefore, the life of the grave, questioning, reward or punishment (of the grave-life) should not be attributed only to the corpse buried underground.

Death is the phenomenon of the spirit's leaving the body. It is body that dies, not spirit. Human is essentially spirit. Body is its home or garment. One's existence is not harmed through change of garment or through its getting ripped off or exterminated. Our Lord, who makes us wear this body in this world's life, and who thus accommodates us in this universe, separates our spirit from that garment when He makes us emigrate from this world.

Death is not extermination. It is the door of a better world. A seed underground apparently dies, rots and becomes eradicated, but in reality it enters a better life, from the life of a seed to a life of a tree.

Similarly, a person who dies apparently goes under the earth, rots, but in reality s/he finds a more beautiful life in the intermediate realm (the realm of the grave).

Body and spirit are like a light-bulb and electricity. When the bulb is broken, electricity does not die out, but continues to exist. Even if we don't see it, we are sure that electricity is still existent. Likewise, when human dies, spirit leaves the body. But it continues to exist. Allah ensures the spirit's life in the intermediate realm by making it wear a more appropriate and beautiful garment.

When human is put into the grave after death, two angels named Munkar and Naker come to him/her and ask: “Who is your Lord? Who is your Prophet? What is your religion?” Those who have belief and good deeds answer those questions correctly. The gates of Paradise are opened to such dead people, who answer the questions correctly, and they are shown Paradise. Unbelievers and hypocrites cannot answer those questions correctly. And the gates of Hell are opened to them and the torment therein is shown to them. While believers will live without anxiety and with peace and blessings in the grave, unbelievers and hypocrites will suffer torment.

There are certain verses of Qur'an and hadiths which denote the presence of torment and of blessing in the grave. In a verse, it is stated: “The Fire: they are exposed to it morning and evening; and when the Last Hour comes in (and the Judgment is established, it is ordered): "Admit the clan of the Pharaoh into the severest punishment. " (The Qur'an, Al-Mumin, 40:46) According to that verse, there is torment before the Doomsday, too; in other words, in the grave. The Prophet explained that the verse: "Allah keeps firm those who believe by the true, firm word in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.” (The Qur'an, Ibrahim, 14:27) was revealed about the blessing of grave. (Bukhari, Tafsir, Surah: 14).

There are many hadiths mentioned in books of hadith. Some of them are as follows:

While the Prophet, peace and blessings upon him, was passing by a cemetery, he saw that two dead people in two graves were suffering torment for some petty things. One of the dead people in those two graves was making Namima (informing s.o. of s.o.’s drawbacks that are related to the hearer) and the other was not avoiding urine (not paying attention to avoiding urine drops while urinating). Thereupon Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings upon him, took a green branch, split it into two, and planted them each on the two graves. The Companions asked why he did so. The Prophet replied: “As long as those two branches do not dry, the torment those two suffer is hoped to be alleviated.” (Bukhari Janaiz, 82; Muslim, Iman, 34; Abu Davud, Taharat, 26)

The Prophet says in another hadith of his: “The grave is either a garden of the gardens of Paradise, or a pit of the pits of Hell.” (Tirmidhi, Qiyamat, 26)

In another hadith, the Prophet says: “When the deceased is put to grave, two dark blue angels, one named Munkar, the other Naker, come, and they say to the dead: “What do you say about Muhammad (PBUH)?” And s/he answers: “He is the slave and Messenger of Allah. I witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.” Thereupon the angels say: “We already knew you would say so.” Then they widen his/her grave seventy yards. And then this person's grave is enlightened. Then the angels say to the deceased: “Lie and sleep!” S/he says: “Go to my family and inform them of my situation.” The angels say: “Continue sleeping till the Day of Resurrection, just like the person who is in his/her wedding night and who is waken only by the person who s/he likes most.” If the dead is a hypocrite, the angels say to him/her: “What do you say about Muhammad (PBUH)?” And the hypocrite answers: “I had heard people say some things about Muhammad, and I talked like them. I know nothing else.” The angels say to him/her: “We already knew you would say so.” And then the earth is addressed: “Pressure this person as much as you can!And the earth starts to pressure. To such an extent that that person feels as if his/her bones entangled each other. That torment continues till the Day of Resurrection.” (Tirmidhi Janaiz 70)

In the Qur'an, about the grave life of the martyrs, it is stated: "Do not think at all of those killed in God's cause as dead. Rather, they are alive; with their Lord they have their sustenance." (The Qur’an, Al-‘Imran, 3:169), "And say not of those who are killed in God's cause: "They are dead. " Rather they are alive, but you are not aware.” (The Qur’an, Al-Baqarah, 2:154)

It is more appropriate to believe that the torment will be suffered by both the spirit and the body. However, it will not be the body which is put to earth that will be tormented, but the new luminous body, which is suitable for the realm of grave and which the spirit wears after leaving its worldly body, will be tormented. In the verse it is stated: They ask you about the spirit. Say: "The spirit is of my Lord's Command, and of knowledge, you have been granted only a little. (The Qur’an, Al-‘Isra, 17:85).

You just remain positive, Allah never takes the soul until unless, it is the time... You maintain your prayer, dhikr and dua... those useless fears will wear off, rather you will feel strong to face your Lord! :) Hope this helps! :)

I think deep down we're all afraid of death because we don't know where we're going after this life.

Paul Walker and Nelson Mandela met their end times simply because Allah had written for their time to come then. You don't know what age you'll live up to so make the most of your life while you have it (in terms of gaining knowledge etc.)

Dear sister, it is not good to fear something what hasn´t happened yet - many people stress about kind of matters in they life. They feel worry about future happenings and forget to live life at the present. I wish I would have some advice for you but many times I too make the same - worry today what might happens tomorrow. Then I just try my best not to worry about it - not too much. I pray and try to leave it to Allah only as he knows what I don´t know - and what I don´t even need to know.

Be patient sister, we do not know when we will die. It can be tomorrow it can be 90 years from now. It is natural to fear death to a certain extent but you should not fear death so much, rather you should hope for Jennah and think of it when death comes to mind. Thinking of death so much may be a blessing for you too since we should also act as if we will die tomorrow, i.e. be the best person we can, not cause problems for others, be easy going, not get so attached to the dunya since you know you will die one day, be happy with what we have, not worry so much about things to come or future events, worry about what you will do tomorrow, what you will do if some calamaties happen, etc. Basically live day by day and not worry about hypothetical situations. If you are constantly reminded of death you will be a better person inshallah. Don't focus on death so much though but focus on the beautiful things that will come after we die and you will see that you no longer fear death but wish for it so you can hurry up your way to get to Paradise and meet Allah SWT.

The Prophet SAW tells us to act like a stranger or a traveler in Dunya, since it is just temporary and the real life worth living is the one to come. We should not be so attached and establish only things meant to benefit us in this life, rather our focus should be the next life:

Narrated Mujahid:

'Abdullah bin 'Umar said, "Allah's Apostle took hold of my shoulder and said, 'Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler." The sub-narrator added: Ibn 'Umar used to say, "If you survive till the evening, do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death." [Bukhari Volume 8, Book 76, Number 425]

This life will last around 65-80 years for most people, but the next life is endless.... endless means infinity which is 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 years.... this many years next to infinity is still a very minute number, in fact mathematically it is considered ZERO since infinity will continue forever (a ga jillion times longer than the number I have put up eventually). So keep this in mind sister, this life is literally NOTHING ZERO compared to the life of the Hereafter, this is why it is so important we be so good in this life to be in Heaven in the next life ins.

Your thoughts and concerns for your family are wonderful, but you can only warn them. It is not your responsibility if they become Muslim or not and only Allah can change their hearts. The best thing you can do for them is be a good example and ask Allah to guide them. Do not stress about these things, but do work on them. It is all the Kadr of Allah SWT.

Read the Quran very closely and get to the state in your Iman that you don't doubt a single thing in Islam. Then you will see that all your worries and fears will disappear. The more knowledge you gain of Islam the easier your life will be inshallah.

Try hard and do your best in everything, but then put your trust in Allah SWT and your life will be very easy inshallah. Rather than stressing do good actions and seek to correct yours and others ways, stressing will only cause you heartache and have little benefit to you while also cause lots of extra and unneeded psychological problems- seek refuge in Allah from sheytan that may be causing you to fear many things and have lots of unneeded anxiety- Sheytan attacks us from our weaknesses.

Narrated 'Aisha:
The Prophet said, "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and receive good news because one's good deeds will not make him enter Paradise." They asked, "Even you, O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "Even I, unless and until Allah bestows His pardon and Mercy on me." [Volume 8, Book 76, Number 474]

We all get stressed out and worry sometimes, this is part of the test of this life. So be patient at these times and remember Allah SWT often and make dua to Him, after hardship comes ease. Allah tests those he loves the most, and these tests do save us from a lot of worse things that are out there. It may seem hard now, but you will likely see that your hardships turn out to make you a better and stronger person for example.

The Prophet SAW did not fear for us poverty (starvation/death), but he feared for us that we would get wealthy and forget about Allah SWT. This should be our biggest fear too, distancing ourselves from Allah SWT which may cause us to go to Hell fire- dying in a state without iman is my biggest fear. May Allah SWT protect us from an evil ending and may we all die as the best Muslims. Ameen.

The Prophet SAW said:
“By Allah I don’t fear for you poverty, but I fear that the world would be abundant for you as it has been for those before you, so you compete for it as they have competed for it, so it destroys you as it has destroyed them.” (Agreed upon)

This hadith explains a lot of the ummahs state, when many Muslims get rich they start falling into all kinds of sins. Wealth is a huge fitnah and test, especially for men.

The Prophet SAW said:
"Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him. And whoever hates to meet Allah, Allah hates to meet him."

And then Aishah explained:
"I asked: O Prophet of Allah, does that also mean hating death, whereas everyone of us hates death? Then he answered, "It does not mean like that. But a Mu'min when (facing death) he is given the good news of Allah's mercy, pleasure and His paradise so that he loves meeting with Allah and thus Allah loves to meet him. And indeed a kuffar, when (facing death) he is given the bad news of Allah's punishment and His wrath, so that he hates meeting with Allah and thus Allah also hates to meet him."
[Bukhari and Muslim]

So inshallah be of those that would love to meet Allah SWT. We all fear death, but it is inevitable and going to happen. This just reminded me of the time I was in the hospital Emergency Room for severe stomach pains, the doctors said it could be something very serious and I should not travel or I will likely die if it happened to me on an airplane if it was due to one of the serious issues he mentioned (I had an important travel I had to go on the following day). Wallahi it was the happiest I ever been in my life, the thought I was so close to die and that I was soon to meet Allah SWT made me so happy inside, all my problems in the dunya disappeared and all I could think about was Allah. Elhamdulillah. I took the airplane flight hoping I may die... unfortunately I am still alive.

Note though, none of this is the same as wishing for death. The Prophet SAW taught us not to wish for death, and if our situation was so bad that we did want to die to just say that if it is best for us, that Allah SWT take our lives only then. Note the above hadith also does not mean the Prophet SAW preferred us to poverty, but he SAW wished for us to have good lives and be successful rather than poor miser types.

I mentioned these things so you can see there are people on the opposite side of the spectrum (some fear death so much some want death so much)... The Dunya is so full of problems and dirty that I think many Muslims cannot wait to escape it and go onto a more pure life in the Hereafter.

Narrated Sahl:
I heard the Prophet saying,
"A (small) place equal to an area occupied by a whip in Paradise is better than the (whole) world and whatever is in it; and an undertaking (journey) in the forenoon or in the afternoon for Allah's Cause, is better than the whole world and whatever is in it." [Bukhari Volume 8, Book 76, Number 424]

May Allah make us inhabitants of Jennah. Ameen. Don't stress sister you are Muslim, elhamdulillah. Stay patient for a little more time and you will attain the true success (Jennah).

Thank you all. I feel much better now. I feared it because I thought I might not be able to fulfill my duties.

Another cause of my fear was the cat wailing near the hostel I live in. We were discussing horror stories one night and we suddenly heard a cat wailing. One of my friends then said that something bad will happen after a cat cries. The next day Nelson Mandela died. On that very day, the cat again cried. Then again, the next day, a well-known Telugu comedian died. I know I shouldn't believe in superstitions and all but this freaked me out. I flushed it out though...

Again thank you very much! :)

You should not fear death, death is simply a natural transition our spirit goes through when it returns to its creator. You should spend your time making your allotted lifetime on earth the best person you can be. Cat cries and bad things happen is only superstitious coincidence. Bad things happen all the time, everywhere and cats do cry it is their nature the two things are not connected. Do not worry about it.

Best wishes for your future.

Allah SWT looks at our intentions, if you die before performing a duty if you had the intention then it is the same as if you did it. Also, if you wish to do good and you don't do it you still get a good deed, and if you do actually do it you get at least 10 good deeds. Only if you reach age 60 and you have not corrected your ways yet does a person have no right to ask Allah SWT for guidance and forgiveness since Allah has already given you a long life to correct yourself. Allah is the Most Forgiving and Most Merciful and if a person still changes their is lots of hope for them of course. But you cannot procrastinate and say "I will have my fun now when I am young but when I am older I will be a good Muslim." People that plot like this are only fooling themselves and Allah may take their souls well before they turn good and they will only have heaps of bad deeds, and this type of lifestyle will likely take them further away from Allah to the point that they never turn good.

Here are some ayat to why I say the above about older people have less chance of forgiveness if they just start practicing even though they knew Islam was correct their whole life.

The Prophet SAW said:
“Allah will not accept the excuse of any person whose instant of death is delayed till he is sixty years of age.” [Sahih Bukhari]

And for those who disbelieve will be the fire of Hell. [Death] is not decreed for them so they may die, nor will its torment be lightened for them. Thus do we recompense every ungrateful one.

And they will cry out therein, "Our Lord, remove us; we will do righteousness - other than what we were doing!" But did We not grant you life enough for whoever would remember therein to remember, and the warner had come to you? So taste [the punishment], for there is not for the wrongdoers any helper.

Indeed, Allah is Knower of the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and earth. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.
[Quran 35:36-38]

So you can see this is why a Muslim should always strive to be good throughout his life, we have no guarantees. We are responsible for our actions and cannot have an excuse, especially if we reach an old age. We must work, pray and hope very hard for Jennah and fear Allah SWT and Jehenem very much and live our life according to this. If you have these two concerns then everything else in your life will fall in line inshallah and you will have an easy life. You will be satisfied with anything that happens to you as you know your real goal is Jennah and everything in this life is just a test.

This hadith should paint a good picture of how the joys and pain in this life mean nothing compared to the joys and pains of the Hereafter for you inshallah (it is one of my favorite hadith):
Anas b. Malik reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said that one amongst the denizens of Hell who had led a life of ease and plenty amongst the people of the world would be made to dip in Fire only once on the Day of Resurrection and then it would be said to him: O, son of Adam, did you find any comfort, did you happen to get any material blessing? He would say: By Allah, no, my Lord. And then that person from amongst the persons of the world be brought who had led the most miserable life (in the world) from amongst the inmates of Paradise and he would be made to dip once in Paradise and it would be said to him: O, son of Adam, did you face, any hardship? Or had any distress fallen to your lot? And he would say: By Allah, no, O my Lord, never did I face any hardship or experience any distress. [Sahih Muslim Book 39. Giving Description Of The Day Judgement, Paradise and Hell]

Our intentions are why Allah SWT gives us Jennah forever, our intentions were always to be good in this short life and to be a good person forever.

And that is why Jehenem is forever for many, if they did not die they would have always been bad for as long as they lived (i.e. 1 billion years of bad deeds and worshiping other things besides Allah SWT alone). Their intentions are not good so they are recompensed for this to suffer in Hell forever.

This is why our intentions and sincerity are so key for us. We must work very hard to purify our intentions and be sincere in our faith. Iman will always go up and down, this is normal. But inshallah we should try to get into a state in our Iman that we always wish to feel the sweetness of iman and hate to be any other way, this is a never ending battle we have against our nefs and sheytan.

May Allah SWT save us from the Fire and grant us Jennah. Ameen

And do not forget that none of us will enter Jennah by our actions and good deeds, we will only enter through the Mercy of Allah SWT. So you must seek a middle path to be balanced in life, not so extreme to pray every single night and fast every single day, for example or think that your one good deed will get you into Jennah. We should do good deeds of course and lots of them, but we should not get lost in this mentality of I will fail or be doomed if I do not do such and such action.

Narrated 'Aisha RA:
Allah's Apostle SAW said, "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise, and that the most beloved deed to Allah's is the most regular and constant even though it were little." [Volume 8, Book 76, Number 471]

Salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuhu to all those in the thread,
my beloved sister, some of my brothers and sister above me have posted beautiful posts, but my suggestion is : live your life taking the most out of every minute, you'll fail sometimes, it'll be hard but if you just live your normal life remembering Allah always as your FRIEND, LOVER, COMPANION , HELPER..He'll help you and be there for you.. for Allah said: ''
The Prophet (sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Allah the Most High said, ‘I am as My servant thinks (expects) I am. I am with him when he mentions Me. If he mentions Me to himself, I mention him to Myself; and if he mentions Me in an assembly, I mention him in an assembly greater than it. If he draws near to Me a hand’s length, I draw near to him an arm’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.’”

[Sahih Al-Bukhari]

Salam : ) <3
