Deadly attack on satirical magazine in Paris
At least 12 people, including four cartoonists and two policemen, killed by three gunmen at Charlie Hebdo magazine.
Three heavily armed men have attacked a French satirical magazine based in Paris, killing at least 12 people, including four cartoonists and two policemen, officials have said.

The lawyer of the magazine confirmed that four cartoonists working with the publication, including the publisher Stephane Charbonnier, known as 'Charb', were among the dead. The cartoonists known as Cabu, Tignous and Wolinski were also killed in the attack, AFP news agency quoted a judicial source as saying.

Charlie Hebdo has drawn repeated threats for its caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, among other controversial sketches.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said the assault was carried out by three attackers.

In an amateur camera footage shared on the Internet, the attackers are heard shouting, "We have avenged the Prophet Muhammad".

The gunmen fled eastwards towards the Paris suburbs, dumping their car in a residential area, police said. They then hijacked another car before running over a pedestrian and disappearing.

Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland, reporting from Paris, said journalists and cartoonists reported several masked men dressed in black entering the building who then began to fire with automatic weapons.

"Some journalists took refuge on the roof," Rowland said.

"Charlie Hebdo has pushed boundaries in the past, and continues to challenge the idea of censorship."

President Francois Hollande, speaking outside the office of the magazine, described the attack as having been carried out by barbaric people.

"This is an attack on free speech." he told reporters. "No one can harm the spirit of this country

The body represents France's Muslim community, which is Europe's biggest and estimated to number between 3.5 million and five million people.

Hollande held a cabinet meeting at the Elysee Palace over the incident on Wednesday.

French authorities said that school trips and all school outdoor activities have been cancelled until further notice while the gunmen are at large.

US President Barack Obama's spokesman said the US "condemns [the attack] in the strongest terms".

Josh Earnest said US officials have been in close contact to assist the French in the wake of the incident.

Earnest said the French have been "stalwart allies" in the US fight against the ISIL, adding: "We know they are not going to be cowed by this terrible act."

If these barbarians had an issue with that mazagine, they could always choose to voice their opinion by a peaceful protest. But no, muslims don't want to learn the basic norms of a civilized society.

I guess it is time for people like me to pack their things to go back to where we belong, before some outrageous europeans start burning our houses. Back to hell. Yes, our countries, which have been turned to hell by the same barbarians.

As-salaam `Alaykum,

And one of the principales of such a "civilized society" is to respect one another in a Muslim Community; it is one of the important Muslim duties has to be accomplished before asking the others else to follow or embrace Islam. May Allah(swt) grant Muslims beneficial knowledge, Ameen.

I confess, I have no respect left for those killers and their sympathizers. Basic norms of mutual respect have no meaning, when there is no respect for human life.

Salam,
Thanks for the sharing brother. this is a bad very bad news for all of us.
At the same time this is disgusting that, every time any ugly fact happened first time it labeled with Islam or Muslims. It is shameful. Some one do it labeling the code of Muslims there then everyone stat to criticize directly Islam and Muslims no matter what are they actually.

We are in a big trap to destroy our dignity. Where as Qurán says: “KUNTUM KHAIRA UMMATIN UKH-RIJAT LIN-NAAS".
We need to show this to the world. May Allah for forgive us guide us.

Assalamu alaikum brother Zaman,

Although it is still not confirmed but we all know, who can do that.

The last two attacks on school children (Peshawar and Beslan-Russia) were done by muslims, so if a third attack happens, we will know who is behind that.

"Khaira Ummatin" is not a status, which we have got just because we call ourselves muslims. Bani Israel had the same understanding for themselves and that has been addressed in Sura alBaqarah. This status is conditional with "amr bil ma'ruf wa nahi 'anil munkir" and we know that there can be no "amr bil ma'ruf wa nahi 'anil munkir", unless we are ourselves on a much higher moral ground. Do you think, we have the face to tell others what they should do and what not?

The difference between us and our forefathers, who were defeated by mongols on the battlefield, is that we are too fixed on regaining the power, breaking all sorts of moral norms set by Islam. Our forefathers gave up power but did not leave their moral values and as a result, the next generations of mongols became muslims.

By the way, in another forum, a number of muslims are trying to justify that attack.

If this newspaper had an unchecked freedom of expression , the lions of Allah have an unchecked freedom of action. These cartoonists (LA) deserved it.

Is there a limit to the low, the muslims can go? If there is one, it is still not visible.

Unchecked freedom of expression does not equate to unchecked freedom of action - where is that in the Qur'an and Sunnah? Make a protest, make petitions, write letters to newspaper editors. Be eloquent, argue intelligently, be creative, but act within the law. Show that Islam deserves respect because it is good. There is no justification for the attack.

We can´t expect that others would respect us and our religion if we even try to justify kind of manic attacks. In the islamic countries laws don´t allow ordinary citizens take the right to revenge to their own hands but let court to punish persons whose broke the islamic values. Why we should then allow some groups/individuals to do the same in the other countries?

No sane muslims will condone this killing. But as expected Islam and Muslims being generalized immediately before one may figure out what actually happened.

I wanted to know the best of the life of one who holds today an undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind, I became more than ever convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet the scrupulous regard for pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the second volume (of the Prophet's biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of that great life. (Young India,'1924.)

“The sayings of Prophet Muhammed are a treasure of wisdom not only for Muslims but for all of mankind.”

James Gavin, Speeches by a U.S. Army General

“Among leaders who have made the greatest impact through the ages, I would consider Prophet Muhammed before Jesus Christ”

M.H. Hyndman

"Mohammed never assigned himself a status more than a common man and a messenger of God. People had faith in him when he was surrounded by poverty and adversity and trusted him while he was the ruler of a great Empire. A man of spotless character who always had a confidence in himself and in God’s help. No aspect of his life remained hidden nor was his death a mysterious event." (The Awakening of Asia)

Sir William Muir

“Mohammed brought an end to idol worship. He preached monotheism and infinite Mercy of God, human brotherhood, care of orphan, emancipation of slaves, forbidding of wine - No religion achieved as much success as Islam did." (Life of Mohammed)

Annie Besant

It is impossible for anyone who studies the life and character of the great Prophet of Arabia, who knew how he taught and how he lived, to feel anything but reverence for that mighty Prophet, one of the great messengers of the Supreme. And although in what I put to you I shall say many things which may be familiar to many, yet I myself feel, whenever I reread them, a new way of admiration, a new sense of reverence for that mighty Arabian teacher. One Muslim police officer was killed in this massacre.

People on other forums are trying to defend this by bringing up the story of a sahaba who killed his wife after she insulted the prophet. They say that the prophet didn't say anything to this man and that's why it is allowed for us to follow in his footsteps. Can people shed some light on this issue?

While this deeply saddens me, I am in no way supporting Charlie Hebdo's cartoons. They're horribly offensive.

People? Not scholars then?
In a statement by the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia on alifta.org he calls "on the officials in the government of Denmark to bring the newspaper that published such cartoons to account and oblige it to apologize for its abhorrent crime, and also to punish those who took part in provoking this issue."

He does not call for shooting people, he does not call for violence, he does not justify the attacks in Denmark on the grounds of one of the Sahaba (ra) killing his wife.

Do these people suppose they are better qualified to issue fatawa than the Mufti of Saudi Arabia? What training do they have?

While this deeply saddens me, I am in no way supporting Charlie Hebdo's cartoons. They're horribly offensive.
Agreed

Sister,

Provocation by way of cartoons is no response to vicious killing whilst shouting "Allahu Akbar".

I think the scariest result for Muslims now, is that this attack was the last straw. The world is sick of seeing terrorist attacks by Muslims. They are tired of defending muslims. They are tired of seeing women in black cloaks and face coverings, they are tired about hearing of honour killings, they are tired of seeing long frizzy beards on men with pants above their ankles.

There are Muslims who have lived in Western countries for several generations. We are now going to be looked at with suspicion and disgust.

Not sure if any of you have heard - the first person killed by the terrorists was a muslim police officer by the name of Ahmed Merabet.

If attacks like the above represent a course of action for immediate or long term emigration to Muslim countries, then I for one, will not be intimidated by them and leave out of fear, nor will I see it as a means of it being something that shows I agree or disagree with the thoughts, behaviours, opinions or belief systems of the wider majority.

Western nations or I should add the Kafirun have in the past, continue to in the present and will go on to further oppress, hurt, destroy and annihilate Muslims. Reasons for doing so are helpful, but not necessary. It facilitates an affair, gives legitimacy, popular support and makes the destruction of Muslims easier, both among their own people as well as among and from Muslims themselves, but it will not stop their dislike and internal hatred of Islam from the bottom of their hearts.
