Only 5% of women work and they aren't allowed to drive!
Saudi says it's an Islamic country, but is it really?

well it is their cultur everybody brings a bit of his culture with him including yourself ....why do people always compare thing according to their own standards? leave those countries alone if they have deficiencies it is up to them to solve it if they ever wish to do so inschallah

The sister in the video did say she believes the reason why so few women work is that they choose not to. I can believe that. In Islam a woman never has to work but always can.

I too don't understand why Saudi women cannot drive. I'd really like to know the rationale behind it. I asked this question when I worked in Riyadh but no one could give me an answer.

While I personally disagree with a couple of things the sister said, such as the niqaab and music, I totally respect and support her decisions.

I understand what you are saying but this is one sisters life, a sister that lives in an "upper middle class home" I'd like to see more videos like this from all classes. My opinion about women not working so much in Saudi is I believe it's socialy discouraged. As well isn't it true that women can't work in Medina?? I could be wrong

Jazak Allah for showing this.

Very interesting! Honestly I wish I could watch more so I could get a better feel for the culture there. And like sister Jabba stated I would like to see more of a diversity in the women representation. In other words women from different social/economic status. Was this woman a Saudi native? Her accent was American sounding.

So when I go on Hajj(Inshallah) will I have to cover to that extent in the ariport and such? I know we are not permitted to wear nikab during the actual Hajj itself.

This is kind of a funny thought that occurred to me: So many people think that Muslim men oppress women and treat them horribly, but whenever sexes are segregated for a meal, like when there are guests over, the men usually eat on the floor and the women get the table. At least, that's what it is in this video and that's been my experience so far.

Beautiful homes and beautiful malls - Saudi Arabia isn't a desert wasteland like so many people like to think. I would never choose to live there though. To visit, of course, but never to live. My fiancé said he wouldn't mind living there someday and I told him he could only do it if he left me back in the US or Pakistan lol.

I saw a documentary that followed 4 people going on hajj. If I remember correctly, they showed them arriving and the two women were only wearing hijab - not niqab and abaya. But I'm not totally sure.

Asalaamu Alaykum,
Sister shyHijabi, you do not HAVE to wear the niqab in the airport, or anywhere else in Saudi. For some who are questioning whether Saudi is an Islamic country based upon whether women can drive or not is a flawed starting point for objective discussion. Just because a country is 'Islamic' doesnt mean it is without problems, rather it is a society that is striving to be Islamic, so at least its going the right direction, more than what can be said of the direction that many other countries are taking. Yes, one may say that there is an 'underground' culture of the Saudis which indulges in various immoralities, but at least they have the shame to not boast about it like most of the countries. We should pray for them, as we should pray for all the Muslims in whichever land they reside.

Thank you Brother Nazir for answering that question. I am very, very curious about Saudi Arabia but still have some old prejudicial fear of visiting there. :shymuslima1: I know everything will be fine but my family told me that Saudi Arabia was a scarey place for women to go, that if you show your arms you will be lashed or stoned. (rolls eyes) And I mean they told me even if it was accidental.

I now this is hogwash but I still have to battle the old lies that were taught to me growing up.

salaam alaiykum,

I just added part II of the video. and I changed the part I .. now its more complete and longer video.

thanks for that.

this video i think should be able change the perceptions of western people on women in Saudi and other islamic countries. i personally feel that i could be in such a place. when i had been there couple of years ago i was so happy there as you drive down the streets in jeddah, there are no hoardings with women in bare minimum which you tend to see anywhere else. you see everyone going to masjid as the time of prayer approaches. that was really good. one thing which i felt wrong was when i had been to a mall wherein womens lingerie were in display at a shop with mannequins. Even the kid who passes that store will see that. except that i had a real good experience there.

Saudi citizens have free education free full paid scholorships to different countries+a paycheck..So its not surprising if she has an American accent since shes English educated

Just because a country is Islamic doenst mean its 100% flawless. We should be happy at least they make an effort to implement Muslim laws in Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries.Even countries like Malaysia which is a role model for Muslim countries has its flaws.Obviously they're not perfect when it comes to that (as no one is these days) but IMO they do it in a lot more organized, less corrupt way than their other Muslim counterparts.

lol..ur hands wont get chopped off unnessarily there in Saudi..You wont get ur hand scut off if u steal a candybar or bicycle there..Ur hands will prolly get cut off if u rob a bank/stole jewellery store and dont admit guilty

Thats right.Saudi is a thriving metropolis filled with modern buildings.Deserts and camel ridings are ONLY available in certain remote places. Its amusing to know western media is often bias and prefer to portray arabs as backward camel desert dwellers
