You know the news is pretty serious when it's making it on to Aljazeera as opposed to just the local news.

A warning was issued in our city last weekend where the police urged people to not panic as parts of the city would remain isolated from the rest of Australia, in the form of mini-islands, for about 10 days. The airport has been closed for over a week now, and the motorway to Brisbane has also been blocked off. My brother made it back to our city from Melbourne on the very last flight before the airport was closed.

Also, it was strongly recommended to not try and swim across as there are crocodiles and snakes in the flood waters. Nice.

However, the suburb I live in is quite elevated so Alhamdullilah our house has not been affected. Our city overall has been quite safe. However, some of the neighbouring cities have had much more severe damage. Also, many rural residents and farmers have had lost a lot of their land and livestock.

I guess another reason these stories are making such big headlines across the world is because of the economic impact: a significant portion of the world's coal production has stopped.

Also, the prices of many fruits have skyrocketed throughout the rest of Australia and also other parts of the world. My family bought about 150 mangoes last month for $25. One of my friends ate a mango (just one) from Queensland, Australia for $7 yesterday.

Assalam alaikum.
