As-salaamu'alaykum,

One day, while Umar (radiyAllahu anh) was walking on the road, he passed by a man who was engaged in a conversation with a woman. Umar hit the man with his stick, and then the man said,

"O Leader of the Believers, she is my wife!"

Umar said,

"Then why are you standing on the road with your wife. Don't you know that such behaviour will arouse suspicion and will invite others to talk behind your back?"

The man,

"O Leader of the Believers, just now we have arrived in Madeenah (after a long journey), and we are talking about where we should stay (during our visit here)."

Umar handed the man his stick and said,

"Exact your revenge against me, O slave of Allah."

The man said,

"I forgive it for you, O Leader of the Believers."

But Umar insisted,

"Take it and exact your revenge."

After going back and forth in this manner, the man said the third time,

"I forgive it for the sake of Allah (Subhaanahu wa ta'aala)."

Finally satisfied, Umar said,

"May you be rewarded for forgiving me for the sake of Allah."

(Akhbaar Umar, pg. 190; refer also to Ar-Riyaadh an-Nadirah).
