Halal Joke : Muslim women walk behind men, the truth

THE JOKE:

Barbara Walters, of 20/20, did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands. She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands.

Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women now seem to, and are happy to, maintain the old custom.

Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, "Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?"

The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation said, "Land Mines."

THE MORAL:

Continuing the joke, the moral is obviously that, "Behind every man is a smart woman!".

All joking aside though, many of the Islamic rules and recommendations stem from the desire for men to shoulder the responsibility of maintaining the women in their family. Males are charged with providing female relatives with security and comfort as they live their lives. In certain situations, it is Islamically sound for a son to inherit more than a daughter. Why? Because Islamically the son also must provide for his family while the daughter may use her money any way she wishes.

Problems arise, as they always do with human beings, when an individual abuses the privileges that they are given. Men can become neglectful and women can become greedy, among other vices. Islam also has checks and balances in place when these types of things happen.

Essentially, what can be taken from the joke above is that sometimes things look a certain way, when they really are something else. One cannot assume that what they believe is correct, when they have no real knowledge or wisdom to support their beliefs.

By the way, there is no Islamic ruling that I know of which states that a woman should walk behind a man. However, there may be several Islamic reasons to do so.

What do you think they are?

After the 6 day war there was a similar joke.

Last year arab women walked ten paces behind their husbands, this year they walk ten paces ahead of their husbands - the reason - landmines.

Neither really very funny when you get to the root cause.

jokes aside for a moment: arab women do not walk behind their men. if you look at syria for example, it is the women who are successful, they are busy in the Mosque and active in Islam, not the men. ive never seen a Muslim woman walk 5 paces behind her husband!

Asalamu alaykum

If you put jokes to the left side....
"What do you think they are?"
I don't know why women should walk behind her husbad however many steps (I think it superstition, I have never heard of that); However a woman should walk behind any man because of 'Awrah. It's in the qur'an too when one of daughters of Prophet Shu'aib (As) was told by her father to bring Musa (As), she was walking in front of him and he told her to walk behind him; because he could see her legs as she took steps. But to be honest i have never heard of the husband situation. If I made any mistakes, i sincerely ask my dear brothers and sisters to correct me.

In my opinion a woman could walk with her husband side by side and even to a little ahead, both are "libass" for each other and being a women whe needs protection more.A man while walking a little behind his wife can escort her very well.More over if there is some with evil looks will not be able to cast dirty look at the woman, being followed by a man. However as for as myself am concern , I usuallay go with side by side my wife as i like to walk side by side wiht my halal counter part. this gives me joy and to my wife and exemplary confidence in herself.

I naturally prefer to walk behind my dad or any other male guardian in a busy street because they tend to act as a shield...you know...if any man intentionally (or unintentionally) crosses our path from the opposite direction, there are less chances for any ....*collisions* or any other embarassing situations. It comes to me naturally. And protective men will look behind to make sure we are still there. But this habit differs from person to person I guess, unless there is a Shar'ah legislation for it?
